Red Hat Satellite engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on Satellite to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs will be migrated starting at the end of May. If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/SAT-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Lukas Zapletal 2017-06-06 08:16:18 UTC
Foreman has a feature called Hostgroup-based rendering

http://projects.theforeman.org/projects/foreman/wiki/templatewriting#Hostgroup-based-rendering

This is not widely used by our community but Satellite customers often seek this feature because of how provisioning worked in Satellite 5. Please ensure this works:

1) Associate host group with an operating system, installation media and architecture in Templates page.
2) Render Default PXE Template using the button
3) PXE boot an unknown host on PXE/DHCP managed network.
4) Menu shows up, hostgroup should appear, install a system with it.

We often see bugs when templates do not render correctly or they do not complete provisioning process. Make sure the host is provisioned and it register itself into Satellite 6.

This is not a blocker feature, but if this fails to pass, we need to fix this in z-stream at least.

Filed doco bug for this as well: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1459062

Lukas, is this a request for QE testing of the feature? Should it be moved to POST?

Comment 4 Lukas Zapletal 2017-06-07 09:04:06 UTC
Yes, sorry bout that. QA only.

Comment 5 Lukas Zapletal 2017-06-08 12:06:10 UTC
I recorded a video that shows the workflow for Satellite 6.3. I hope that gives you enough information how to test and document this.

Closing this out. Please use Discovery + rules instead of host group provisioning.
