Description Alfredo Pizarro 2017-12-30 00:05:54 UTC
Document URL:https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_cloudforms/4.5/html/installing_red_hat_cloudforms_on_vmware_vsphere/

Section Number and Name:
Chapter 3. Additional Requirements
3.1. Installing VMware VDDK on Red Hat CloudForms

Describe the issue:
The document states that the supported vddk version is 5.5 and gives instructions on how to install this specific version of vddk:
=====================================================
Execution of SmartState Analysis on virtual machines within a VMware environment requires the Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK). Red Hat CloudForms supports VDDK 5.5.
=====================================================

Altough there is a kb https://access.redhat.com/articles/2078103 stating that version 5.5 and 6.0 are supported, but in the Installation document it is not clear if version 6.0 is supported.

Aditionally I installed versión 5.5.5 and I think I hit this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1287098

I hit the same problem with version 5.5.5 (: Unable to mount filesystem. Reason:[FFI::VixDiskLib::ApiWrapper#open (errcode=18000 - VIX_E_CANNOT_CONNECT_TO_HOST)
versión: VMware-vix-disklib-5.5.5-2962804

So the solution that worked for me was change the version from 5.5.5 to 6.5. After I installed the newer vddk version, smart state analysis started to work with no issues.

Suggestions for improvement: Clarify if cfme 5.8 is compatible with vddk version 5.5.5 and clarify if 6.0 and above are supported. Also check if the mentioned bug is still hitting cfme 5.8 and vddk 5.5.5 so it can be removed from the official documentation.

Hi Alfredo,

Thank you for raising this bug.

A similar issue was also raised in BZ#1591977, which we will use as the tracker to update VDDK content in general going forward.

Closing this bug as a duplicate.

Kind regards,

Andrew
