I booted and logged into GNOME with Wayland on my Lenovo P50 laptop, initially without an external monitor attached.

I connected an external monitor (HP ZR2440w). Initially, the system recognized the monitor and briefly displayed the desktop on both screens, but within a second or two it crashed back to the GDM login. I logged in via Xorg and saw this pulseaudio crash, which appears to have taken the whole desktop with it.

strace pulseaudio

Before the crash, pulseaudio was using ~15-20% CPU. I'm not actually sure what triggered the crash.

I wasn't using bluetooth at all, it is on but nothing is paired.

I believe this is a highly visible crasher: abrt pointed me to this bug report after retracing https://retrace.fedoraproject.org/faf/reports/2065512/ .

For me the problem is 100% reproducible: I can not use gnome-shell anymore since upgrading to F28 (Dell E5570).

I noticed I stopped seeing the error when I left bluetooth on, and came back after logging in when I turned bluetooth back off. My testing was limited, though, so it could be unrelated.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Login to latest fedora 26 OS.
2. Search for Compiz-fusion and Compiz-start application.
3. Click on any one of them to open the wizard.
4. You will see that screen goes blank, with a blinking cursor on the top left corner of screen.
5. Press ctrl-C to exit the screen and the user automatically logs out.
6. An error pops us which shows that Pulse-audio crashed.

Test candidate builds are available from
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/rdieter/pulseaudio/

These builds will likely hit fedora update repos when confidence is high regarding it's stability (and absence of regressions).

Mentioning this mostly that there's a reasonable chance these builds may address the issues outlined in this bug. I'd appreciate any feedback you can provide, thanks.

Comment 80 Rex Dieter 2018-05-05 16:03:42 UTC
I think I'll take that back (about the candidate builds fixing the crashes).

These backtraces appear to be related to a downstream patches we're including, in particular,
v5-2-4-bluetooth-separate-HSP-and-HFP.patch
which is related to upstream issue:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93898

I'll reach out and find out more on that status of those patches.

Clean install of Fedora 28 with NVidia drivers. Also appears using open source amd drivers with my Radeon 5450.
Removing bluetooth dongle also not helping.

1. Choose user, type password, hit Enter and login.
2. Black screen appears.

On fresh installation of Fedora 28, pulseaudio immediately crashes.
This seems to occur intermittently afterwards even after updates are applied.
Since no bug report has yet been filed for this issue despite its recurrence and the automatic bug reporter kicked in,
I figured I would fill out a formal (though not terribly comprehensive, my apologies) bug report.

I just logged in (GNOME on Wayland) and pulse audio crashed. I also get some static noises when doing certain things and the sound cuts sometimes. Especially when I'm doing an update through the terminal.

When I disconnect bluetooth based headphones and try to use my monitor speakers (via display port).
There will be no sound.

To fix the sound I have to use 'pulseaudio -k' - sometimes it will work right away, sometimes it will show bug report. If it won't work I try to use sound test in sound settings and this generally helps.
