Description dexter.fryar 2005-06-15 16:31:09 UTC
description
During the initial installation procedure while trying to do an external boot
install the driver is not detected and fails to load.

Computer has no internal hard drives. I only have an external fibre channel
LUN. This setup works fine on my FC3 installation. I was running a clean
install of FC3 and the external drives were auto partitioned and auto detected
without the need for a driver disk.

Steps to reproduce:

Boot from FC4 DVD
Hit enter at boot: prompt
"I did see loading qla2300 driver flash by"
Skip media test

The next screen says:
Warning

No hard drives have been found.
You probably need to manually
choose device drivers for the
installation to succeed. Would
you like to select drivers now?

Choose Yes
Intel NIC driver (e100) is one choice
and
Qlogic 2300 (qla2300) is the other

Select Qlogic and hit enter

Next at the welcome to fedora screen
Choose English -> Next
Choose U.S. English --> Next
Choose Custom installation type
Choose Automatically partition or manually partition it does not matter

The next screen is:
No Drives Found

An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on
which to create new file systems. Please check your
hardware for the cause of this problem.

Observations:
1) I did see the qlogic driver being loaded before the graphics screen started
2) I chose the Qlogic driver when the installer reported no drives found.
3) FC3 auto detects the driver and never prompts me to select the Qlogic
driver.

expected results

Should have autodetected the qlogic driver and the LUN should have been auto
partitioned.

[This comment has been added as a mass update for all FC4 kernel bugs.
If you have migrated this bug from an FC3 bug today, ignore this comment.]

Please retest your problem with todays 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4 update.

If your problem involved being unable to boot, or some hardware not being
detected correctly, please make sure your /etc/modprobe.conf is correct *BEFORE*
installing any kernel updates.
If in doubt, you can recreate this file using..

mv /etc/sysconfig/hwconf /etc/sysconfig/hwconf.bak
mv /etc/modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf.bak
kudzu

Thank you.

Comment 2 dexter.fryar 2005-07-15 21:41:01 UTC
This is on a new/fresh installation from the CDROM which was created from
ISOs. I have a clean formatted LUN and the installation never actually lays
down the OS on the drive due to the driver problems listed above.

Comment 3 Dave Jones 2005-09-30 09:46:42 UTC
it's likely this is only fixable with a newer kernel, which unfortunatly is very
difficult to replace on the existing iso, and respinning an iso is also quite
involved.

unless you find some way of coaxing it into seeing the drives (try acpi=off
perhaps?) this is going to be a 'wait for fc5' resolution. sorry.

http://fedora.isphuset.no/ contains an unofficial Fedora 4.1, which may get you
up and running, as it has a install kernel based on one of the errata kernels.
