Description Patrik Novotný 2018-09-24 09:30:18 UTC
I intend to remove unmaintained minizip library (now packaged as minizip-compat) from the zlib package. Therefore, I'd need all dependent packages to either migrate to the new minizip[1] package or simply bundle the old one.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 31 development cycle.
Changing version to 31.

Comment 2 Troy Dawson 2019-11-20 16:43:30 UTC
The Fedora version of assimp hasn't been updated for several years.
assimp is currently up to version 5.0.0
http://www.assimp.org/
https://github.com/assimp/assimp

Maybe we can get the package updated, and it will lose it's dependency on minizip-compat

Comment 3 Troy Dawson 2019-11-20 20:39:08 UTC
So, looked at the code, no such luck. It still wants the older zlib libraries. (1.2.11)
But, it does have this note in the contrib area. This note hasn't changed over the years.

------
$ cat contrib/zlib_note.txt
This is a heavily modified and shrinked version of zlib 1.2.3

- Removed comments from zlib.h
- Removed gzip/zip archive I/O
- Removed infback.c
- Added Assimp #idefs to exclude it if not needed
- Disabled debug macros in zutil.h

Assimp itself does not use the compression part yet, so
it needn't be compiled (trees.c, deflate.c, compress.c).
Currently these units are just used by assimp_cmd.

I would also really like assimp to be updated to latest version, which is now 5.0.1

I was not able to build Assimp using the zlib/minizip libs provided by Fedora 31.

However, using the zlib provided by Assimp is working:
cmake -DASSIMP_BUILD_ZLIB=true CMakeLists.txt

I will try to upgrade to 5.0 in rawhide in the next week or so. I'm sending an email out now to notify about the soname bump.

I'm not sure I'll be able to update in f31/f32 per the updates policy https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fesco/Updates_Policy/

Comment 6 sdegrande 2020-04-20 08:16:53 UTC
If we could have it in f32, it would be fine. But as long as 5.0 lands in Fedora in a not too far future, I'll be very happy ! We could then avoid to have to build our own version of assimp.

Thanks for your work !

Ping, any progress here? I'm going to need assimp in EPEL8 as well.

Comment 8 Rich Mattes 2020-06-23 23:33:34 UTC
I haven't made a whole lot of progress on the upgrade to 5.0. There's a lot of bundled libs to sort out, I'll spend some time on it today and see how far I get.

Comment 9 Rich Mattes 2020-06-27 12:28:29 UTC
I got 5.0.1 building this week with the bundled minizip, I'll try to get it wrapped up this weekend.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 31 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 31 on 2020-11-24.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '31'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 31 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 11 Ben Cotton 2020-11-24 20:12:21 UTC
Fedora 31 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2020-11-24. Fedora 31 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
