Similar problem has been detected: Crash happens whenever Thunderbird Profile Manager is to be used, either when starting it with thunderbird -ProfileManager or starting Thunderbird in a system profile with more than one Thunderbird profile. In second case segmentation fault happens while there's more than one profile in profiles.ini - removing all but Profile0 or using StartWithLastProfile=1 (or anything that skips Profile Manager) allows Thunderbird to start again. Reproduced on clean system profile. It started happening with thunderbird-60.5.0-4. reporter: libreport-2.10.0 backtrace_rating: 4 cmdline: /usr/lib64/thunderbird/thunderbird -ProfileManager crash_function: nsProfileLock::FatalSignalHandler executable: /usr/lib64/thunderbird/thunderbird journald_cursor: s=5e959b6619d4453691bdf16b0ddc1089;i=7a734e;b=574b6e8c3c2d4bfca72a1ed53e09d1f7;m=3f1e0204;t=581badb72a658;x=c13f30ff56db450f kernel: 4.20.7-200.fc29.x86_64 package: thunderbird-60.5.0-4.fc29 reason: thunderbird killed by SIGSEGV rootdir: / runlevel: N 5 type: CCpp uid: 1002

What extensions do people have running? I had various and got it working in safe mode disabling all extensions - found StartUpMaster continuously provoked this problem but several other extensions (e.g. Conversations) did not.
I can reproduce it without any plugin and safe-mode: $ mv .thunderbird/ .thunderbird.bak $ thunderbird --ProfileManager --safe-mode Segmentation fault (core dumped) $ rpm -qa | grep thun thunderbird-60.5.0-4.fc29.x86_64 $ rpm --whatrequires -q thunderbird no package requires thunderbird
It only happens to me on systems with more than one account. Downgrading thunderbird allows me to continue working. I added the following to /etc/dnf/dnf.conf to keep it from upgrading, [main] gpgcheck=1 installonly_limit=3 clean_requirements_on_remove=True # broken as of 2019-02-11, waiting for fix exclude=thunderbird

(In reply to Steeve McCauley from comment #31) > It only happens to me on systems with more than one account. Downgrading > thunderbird allows me to continue working. I added the following to > /etc/dnf/dnf.conf to keep it from upgrading, ... 10x, I can confirm that downgrading thunderbird fixes the problem for me too. I can not even start the profile manager to select the account (so I guess it will not be loading plugins before that).
workaround for the ProfileManager crashing: start with profile directly * have a look at $HOME/.thunderbird/profiles.ini - note the Path= value you want to start * start thunderbird with profile directly: thunderbird --profile $HOME/.thunderbird/$PATH_VALUE_FROM_PROFILES_INI
The problem still persists in thunderbird-60.5.1-1.fc29.x86_64. For testing, I tried the same version from Mozilla site and there is no such problem.

These are just warnings and hardly a reason for the crash.

Thanks for the idea : downgrading (yum downgrade thunderbird) from 60.5.1 down to 52.8.0-1.fc29 Let me kepp working.
Thanks for the hint with the ProfileManager. In my case, with old thunderbird, I get the startup dialogbox: "Would you like to go online now?" Workaround: dnf downgrade thunderbird preferences->advanced->Offline->Manual state when starting up: Online dnf update (no crash at new thunderbird startup any more)
This preference setting change did not prevent the crash for me, still dumps core before any windows appear.

I disabled all of the extensions (gcontactsync, enigmail and startup master) in safe-mode, and then restarted without any problems (other than the 3 !#$!#$ master password prompts). I re-enabled the extensions one at a time until it dumped core at "Startup Master". Disabled it again in safe-mode and now thunderbird 60.x runs wihtout crashing. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-GB/thunderbird/addon/startupmaster/
FYI, I filed a bug report with mozilla and notified the owner of the startupmaster extension. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1530344
(In reply to udo from comment #40) > In my case, with old thunderbird, I get the startup dialogbox: "Would you > like to go online now?" > > Workaround: > dnf downgrade thunderbird > preferences->advanced->Offline->Manual state when starting up: Online > dnf update > > (no crash at new thunderbird startup any more) Not for me. Tried your workaround with no luck. My setup is a multi-profile TB with NO extensions (except the default Lightning). The last working version for me is thunderbird-60.4.0-1.fc28.x86_64 If you want to rollback to a working version there's no need to go back till TB 58: you can download the 60.4 version from here: https://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/fedora/updates/28/x86_64/Packages/t/thunderbird-60.4.0-1.fc28.x86_64.html But I do wonder after 4 months if the Fedora gecko maintainer(s) have been able to reproduce it at least...
I downloaded and installed the thunderbird tarball (thunderbird-60.5.1.tar.bz2) from mozilla and it works just fine with Startup Master extension enabled, so it seems to be an issue with the fedora package, thunderbird-60.5.1-1.fc29.x86_64

I can also confirm the previous findings, with fc29.x86_64 packages from Koji: - the setup includes multiple profiles and thunderbird is set to ask for profile at every start - 60.5.0-1 is the last version that works fine - 60.5.0-3 and 60.5.1-1 end immediately after start with a SIGSEGV; starting with --ProfileManager also reproduces the SIGSEGV (which is normal, as this is the default in this setup), while starting with -P <profilename> allows a normal start The diff between 60.5.0-1 and 60.5.0-3 is surprisingly (to me, at least) large, with many Wayland related changes. So in this light perhaps of note: I'm not running Wayland.

I tested thunderbird on Fedora 30 Beta Workstation and KDE, with both Wayland and x.org. Segmentation fault is 100% reproducible on clean installation, so the problem stems from downstream wayland related changes, but brakes profile manager in general. What else can we provide to help get this fixed?

Hello, After upgrade on Fed30, same issue. But I figure out a workaround, the issue is clearly into the old profile because it works when I moved ~/.thunderbird to .thunderbird-old/, recreated a new profile and copy what is needed (I'm in IMAP) : cp ~/.thunderbird-old/MyProfile/{abook.mab,history.mab,Mail/Local\ Folders/} ~/.thunderbird More detail about file here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Files My 2 cents Cyril

Fixed version available (there are separate builds for all .fc28 - .fc31, just modify this one-liner): cd $(mktemp -d) && koji download-build --arch=x86_64 thunderbird-60.6.1-5.fc29 && dnf upgrade *
Tested the build for Fedora 30. This particular problem is solved for me and I haven't observed any new/other issues so far. Thanks!
I can also confirm that thunderbird-60.6.1-5.fc29 on x86_64 from koji fixes the problem from me. Now thunderbird correctly displays the profile chooser at startup. Thanks for fixing!
I'm just passing the news, I haven't done those builds: https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=39

I can also confirm that thunderbird-60.7.0-1.fc30 on x86_64 from the updates repo fixes the problem from me. This is the same setup as in comments 49 and 75, with the system upgraded F29 -> F30.

Hello, abrt reported bugs come from various sources/scenarios and usually can't be reproduced. This is automated bug processing which is applied to all abrt reported bugs which are supposed to be non-reproducible. If you can reproduce the bug (you have a testcase), please reopen it and assign it directly to me - stransky. Thanks.
