Description Orion Poplawski 2021-10-12 03:58:08 UTC

Description:
PRRTE is the PMIx Reference Run Time Environment.

The project is formally referred to in documentation by "PRRTE", and
the GitHub repository is "openpmix/%{name}".

However, we have found that most users do not like typing the two
consecutive "r"s in the name. Hence, all of the internal API symbols,
environment variables, MCA frameworks, and CLI executables all use the
abbreviated "prte" (one "r", not two) for convenience.

Package Review
==============

Legend:
[x] = Pass, [!] = Fail, [-] = Not applicable, [?] = Not evaluated

===== Issues =====

- The intended overall license is indeed BSD, but src/util/qsort.c is “BSD with
  advertising”, which is stricter.

  Since this file is only used to work around weird old bugs in weird old
  Solaris versions, it’s probably better and easier to patch out the
  implementation in %prep rather than trying to account for it in the License
  field.

  You *could* remove the .h and .c files and patch them out of the Makefile, or
  patch them out of Makefile.am and do an autoreconf. Or, to keep things
  simpler, just replace them with minimal valid contents and do nothing else:

    # Remove “BSD with advertising” licensed qsort implementation, which was only
    # needed to work around ancient Solaris bugs. The typedef keeps the translation
    # unit from being empty.
    echo '' > src/util/qsort.h
    echo 'typedef int x;' > src/util/qsort.c

- You should have an explicit

    BuildRequires:  make

  rather than relying on indirect dependencies.

  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Remove_make_from_BuildRoot

- The library should be split out into a -libs subpackage separate from the
  command-line tools. The base package and -devel subpackage can then depend on
  the -libs subpackage.

  This satisfies the recommendation for mixed-use packages in
  https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging-guidelines/#_mixed_use_packages
  and also apparently helps with correct multilib filtering; see discussion
  involving Neal Gompa in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1955394.

===== Notes – no change required =====

- The command-line tools pcc and prterun lack man pages. These are desired but
  not mandatory. Since other tools in the package do have man pages, perhaps
  upstream could be convinced to add them.

- An even nicer way to write

    find %{buildroot} -name '*.la' | xargs rm -f

  is

    find %{buildroot} -name '*.la' -delete

- You could, if you liked, write

    https://github.com/openpmix/%{name}/releases/download/v%{version}/prte-%{version}.tar.bz2

  as

    %{url}/releases/download/v%{version}/prte-%{version}.tar.bz2

Just got back to this. Currently, the spec and SRPM URLs are timing out. I’ll try again later—maybe it will fix itself.

Comment 4 Ben Beasley 2021-10-31 13:24:18 UTC
Thanks for the updated submission! The links started working again at some point.

I have a few further recommendations, but the package is approved.

Package Review
==============

Legend:
[x] = Pass, [!] = Fail, [-] = Not applicable, [?] = Not evaluated

===== Issues =====

- You may remove

    %license LICENSE

  from the base package, since it depends on the -libs subpackage, which
  contains the license file.

  No change is required for approval.

- I recommend replacing

    %{_bindir}/*

  with an explicit list of binaries. There is now a rule about this for Python
  packages
  (https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging-guidelines/Python/#_explicit_lists),
  but not a general one. Still, I think the justification is sound:

    The most common mistakes this rule prevents are:
      […]
      • upstream adding commands in %{_bindir}/* – you should always check such
	changes for conflicts […] and keep the list of such files explicit and
	auditable.

  Since there is no rule about this for general packages, this recommendation
  does not block approval.

- The command-line tools pcc and prterun lack man pages. These are desired but
  not mandatory. Since other tools in the package do have man pages, perhaps
  upstream could be convinced to add them.

     Note: Unversioned so-files in private %_libdir subdirectory (see
     attachment). Verify they are not in ld path.

     OK: /usr/lib64/prte/mca_plm_tm.so is not in the ld path, but in a private
     subdirectory of %{_libdir}.

     unknown license. Detailed output of licensecheck in
     /home/reviewer/2013077-prrte/20211031/2013077-prrte/licensecheck.txt

     The unnecessary “BSD (4 clause)”/“BSD with advertising” source is removed

     licenses mentioned here belong to build system files and do not contribute
     to the license of the binary RPMs.
