Rather than branching and building vim-syntastic (which has numerous explicit dependencies, and is officially deprecated), how about focusing on vim-ale instead? It provides similar functionality, is currently maintained, works with vim and neovim, and has no explicit dependencies beyond vim and neovim themselves.
