Comment 2 Lohan G 2022-09-26 02:33:31 UTC
I have tested on the Gnome desktop (Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-37_Beta-1.5.iso) and found the same issue with additional complications.

In addition to overlapping, certain characters disappear after typing.

How to reproduce on Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-37_Beta-1.5.iso:

1) Enable Sinhala > si-wijesekera

2) Type සිංහලෙන් ලිවීමේ දී කොම්බුව ( isxyf,ka ,sjSfua oS flduanqj )

3) Actual result : See "Screenshot - GNOME". The letter බු (nq) has disappeared.

4) Expected result : See screenshot https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1914225

I have ibus-m17n-1.4.17-1.fc37.x86_64 installed on my Fedora 37 system. I see same is available on Fedora 36 as well.
I am not able to reproduce your mentioned issue. I only tested on Gnome Wayland+Firefox on Fedora 37.
You need to also mention in which applications when you type, you are seeing the issue.

Comment 5 Lohan G 2022-09-26 08:51:27 UTC
I have ibus-m17n 1.4.17 on Fedora 37, Fedora Linux 37 (Workstation Edition Prerelease) 64-bit, GNOME 43.0 Wayland. I am able to reproduce it on Gnome Text Editor and Firefox. There is a slight difference between the two. Characters don't seem to get deleted on Firefox (at least during the instances I tried.) I will upload video clips and screenshots of these instances.

Reproducing the issue on Firefox. Some symbols overlap with the adjacent letter.

Comment 8 Lohan G 2022-09-26 09:02:33 UTC
I also found that Firefox renders Sinhala web pages the same way with overlapping vowel symbols. This is Firefox 104.0.2 (64-bit). Is it due to the same issue? Or should I file a separate bug report about it?

Comment 10 Mike FABIAN 2022-09-26 18:46:38 UTC
This mixes many different issues.
The overlapping cannot have anything to do with ibus-m17n. These are rendering problems.

Better to report each one individually with information about

- X11 or Wayland?
- Which application?
- Which font?

The disappearing characters could be a problem in ibus-m17n. But it could also be a Wayland problem.
Are you seeing the disappearing characters on Wayland?

gnome-text-editor is *very* broken for input methods at the moment, can you compare whether gedit behaves the same?

Wayland:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-text-editor/-/issues/454 43 Beta: gnome-text-editor drops pre-edit spontaneously sometimes while typing

Xorg:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2127987 Input methods do not work well in gnome-text-editor, preedit is disappearing and other problems

The gnome-text-editor problems affect *all* input methods, not just ibus-m17n for Sinhala.

There is no character deletion when typing in gedit.

Overlapping continues in all applications : Gedit, LibreOffice, Firefox

Overlapping is the primary issue I wanted to report. What should I do about it? Should I file a different report or can someone add the relevant component to rendering and update this issue? I don't know much about how rendering works. I am just an end-user.

For clarity, this is the situation with character / vowel symbol overlapping:

> X11 or Wayland?
Both on X11 and Wayland

GNOME Text Editor
Gedit
LibreOffice
Firefox

> - Which font?
Noto Sans Sinhala

1) Enable Sinhala > si-wijesekara
2) Type isxyf,ka ,sjSfua oS flduanqj and compare with the expected outcome https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1914225

Comment 18 Mike FABIAN 2022-09-28 13:52:15 UTC
There seems to be a problem with the google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts on Fedora 37.

In Fedora 36, the overlapping you describe is not happening. In Fedoraa 37 it is happening.

On Fedora 36, the font packages have the versions:

$ cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 36 (Thirty Six)
mfabian@taka:~
$ rpm -qa | grep sans-sinhala
google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206-10.fc36.noarch
google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206-10.fc36.noarch

And on Fedora 37 we have:

[mfabian@fedora ~]$ cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 37 (Thirty Seven)
[mfabian@fedora ~]$ rpm -qa | grep sans-sinhala
google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-4.fc37.noarch
google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-4.fc37.noarch
[mfabian@fedora ~]$

Comment 21 Mike FABIAN 2022-09-28 14:04:30 UTC
sinhala-test-file.txt https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1914858 is the test file used in the video https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1914859

In the video, I install the fedora 36 rpms:

https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org//packages/google-noto-fonts/20201206/9.fc36/noarch/google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206-9.fc36.noarch.rpm

sudo rpm -Uhv google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206-9.fc36.noarch.rpm google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206-9.fc36.noarch.rpm --nodeps --force

And this fixes the overlapping in gedit.

As your primary issue seems to be a font problem, have moved the bug from ibus-m17n to google-noto-fonts.

I have also changed the Summary: accordingly and removed ibus and LXDE (does not have anything to do with ibus and not with LXDE either)

If there are remaining problems with typing for you please open specific bugs for the typing problems.
(We know already that ibus input into gnome-text-editor is very broken ..., but if there are other problems when typing Sinhala please report new bugs for these)

You might want to try si-wijesekara not only with ibus-m17n, you can also use si-wijesekara with ibus-typing-booster, that is the better choice in my opinion.

[mfabian@fedora ~]$ unzip -t NotoSansSinhala-v2.006.zip | grep NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf
    testing: NotoSansSinhala/googlefonts/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf OK

    testing: NotoSansSinhala/unhinted/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf OK
[mfabian@fedora ~]$

I removed the rpm packages google-noto-sans-sinhala-* and then copied the .ttf fonts from NotoSansSinhala-v2.006.zip to ~/.fonts/

For example:

cp ./NotoSansSinhala/full/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf .fonts

I found that both NotoSansSinhala/googlefonts/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf and NotoSansSinhala/full/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf work correctly.

NotoSansSinhala/hinted/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf and NotoSansSinhala/unhinted/ttf/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf show tofu (tofu with code points)

Same for me, google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-4.fc37.noarch works on F36 but not on F37. Very strange.

I followed your steps and downgraded the fonts. It fixed the overlapping issue, temporarily.

Then I did a 'dnf update'. After installing those updates I noticed that the overlapping issue has returned. I assume that is because the fonts were replaced again by what is included in Fedora 37?

If ibus-typing-booster is a better solution, is it not possible to make it available with the official release?

The best way to report rendering issues is to reproduce them with pango-view or hb-view.

I think it is installed by default.

You just need to add it using ibus-setup or on Gnome using the gnome-control-center:

"Adding ibus-typing-booster to your desktop: https://mike-fabian.github.io/ibus-typing-booster/docs/user/#1

Yes, "dnf update" brings back the fonts which do not work (They seem to work fine on Fedora 36, so I am not sure why they don't work on Fedora 37.

Comment 40 Mike FABIAN 2022-09-30 09:12:23 UTC
I did a build of pango-1.50.9-1.fc37.x86_64.rpm and installed it.

It did *not* fix the problem. When the
google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-4.fc37.noarch
google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-4.fc37.noarch

fonts are installed,

gedit sinhala-test-file.txt

still shows the rendering problem.

Comment 41 Akira TAGOH 2022-09-30 10:15:03 UTC
I tried the following command to see the difference between google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206-10.fc36 and google-noto-sans-sinhala-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-4.fc37. As a result, I see the same result on both. thus, this isn't a font issue but rendering issue.

$ fc-query -f "%{fontversion}\n" /usr/share/fonts/google-noto/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf
131138
$ fc-query -f "%{fontversion}\n" NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf
131203
$ hb-view --text-file sinhala-test-file.txt --language si --font-file /usr/share/fonts/google-noto/NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf -o f36.png -O png
$ hb-view --text-file sinhala-test-file.txt --language si --font-file NotoSansSinhala-Regular.ttf -o f36.png -O png

We have harfbuzz-4.0.0-2.fc36.x86_64 in f36 and harfbuzz-5.2.0-fc37.x86_64. something might be happened between them I guess.

Comment 42 Parag Nemade 2022-09-30 10:25:32 UTC
Thank you Mike and Akira for your analysis on this bug.

I have reported new harfbuzz issue now at https://github.com/harfbuzz/harfbuzz/issues/3835

Comment 43 Parag Nemade 2022-09-30 10:56:44 UTC
Upstream gave reference to https://github.com/harfbuzz/harfbuzz/issues/3725 which tells us to update font Noto Sans Sinhala to Version 2.006

Comment 44 Akira TAGOH 2022-09-30 11:02:25 UTC
Created attachment 1915243 [details]
rendering result by hb-view with v2.006

tried same with v2.006 and it looks good. let's update sinhala fonts to the latest then...

I installed the update. However, the rendering issue has not been resolved. I gave my feedback on Bodhi. (Updating here too, just to make sure I communicated it right.)

Working fine for me. Did you really install new update?

I did. I used the command you have given above. Since there was no change, I did it for the second time. This is the dnf.log of my second attempt:

Fedora mirrors have not yet got this update. I installed it from koji.
You can also download this rpm
https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/testing/37/Everything/x86_64/Packages/g/google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206%5e1.git0c78c8329-5.fc37.noarch.rpm

You can also give us output of below command on your system
rpm -qa | grep google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts

That clearly mean you have not got yet the new update installed. I request you to please wait 1 more day by which all Fedora mirror will get this update and your system dnf will see this package available for update.
The new updated rpm is
google-noto-sans-sinhala-vf-fonts-20201206^1.git0c78c8329-5.fc37.noarch

Oh, you are right. I am extremely sorry about this. I misunderstood the availability of the update by looking at the note "This update has been pushed to testing." Will wait and verify carefully before testing and reporting back next time.

Comment 56 Lohan G 2022-10-02 03:24:12 UTC
At last, I was able to install the correct update and test it. The rendering issue has been resolved.

Thanks very much for fixing it!
