This bug was initially created as a copy of Bug #2161398

I am copying this bug because: 



Description of problem:

We'd like to backport [1] to 16.2. There are at least 2 BZs [2][3] where it would have helped having the improved logging. [4] is already proposed downstream, but it was a quick hack in order to give a test build to a customer so that they could reproduce their issue with the improved logging.
