Installed Fedora 42 to a new disk/filesystem and tried to install all packages I had in former Fedora 38. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Fedora 42 from Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-42-1.1.iso . 2. dnf distro-sync 3. dnf install --skip-unavailable $(cat to-install) Actual Results: Running transaction Transaction failed: Rpm transaction failed. - file /usr/sbin/tmpwatch conflicts between attempted installs of tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64 and tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64 - file /usr/sbin/rdistd conflicts between attempted installs of rdist-1:6.1.5-85.fc41.x86_64 and rdist-1:6.1.5-85.fc41.x86_64 Expected Results: Installed packages or some two different package names/versions, not the same.

dnf5-5.2.13.1-1.fc42.x86_64
It is enough to run: dnf install tmpwatch
I can reproduce it dnf5-5.2.15.0-1.fc42.x86_64. The cause is a tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64 package being incompatible with a merge of /usr/bin and /usr/sbin in Fedora 42 <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Unify_bin_and_sbin>: # rpm -qlvp tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64.rpm | grep bin lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Jul 20 2024 /usr/bin/tmpwatch -> ../../usr/sbin/tmpwatch lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Jul 20 2024 /usr/lib/.build-id/b6/03e4877f7392598ea02f15eb879e45a7d003bc -> ../../../../usr/sbin/tmpwatch -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 36712 Jul 20 2024 /usr/sbin/tmpwatch The package wants to install /usr/sbin/tmpwatch and /usr/bin/tmpwatch. Because /usr/sbin is a symbolic link to /usr/bin, rpm actually attempts installing /usr/bin/tmpwatch regular file and /usr/bin/tmpwatch symlink. Two files of the same path. You will get the same error with plain rpm tool: # rpm --install tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64.rpm file /usr/sbin/tmpwatch conflicts between attempted installs of tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64 and tmpwatch-2.11-27.fc41.x86_64 tmpwatch needs rebuilding.
OK, I have filed it also for rdist as https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2381693 .
