Description Joachim Deguara 2008-09-10 18:27:10 UTC
Description of problem:

Booting rawhide goes into the ncurses menu but then when it switches to graphics mode, nothing happens and it tries to shutdown. Going to vt5 I see error messages from X but I can't get more details as vt2 shell is unresponsive.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

rawhide boot.iso download Sep. 10 2008

How reproducible:

100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot CD
2. go past media check screen
3. error going to graphics

This laptop uses the 780G IGP which is called Radeon 3200 and perhaps the support in X is not yet there in rawhide.

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below.

Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf whatsoever and let X11 autodetect your display and video card? Attach to this bug /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt as well, please.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

How am I suppose to do that? When it has this error the computer is not interactive (I can switch to different VTs but not type anything) and before the error there is no xorg.conf yet. Remember this is booting off the rawhide boot.iso.
Perhaps this is a more general problem with that daily build as another laptop has the same problem (though there I have to tell it 'nomodeset' in the kernel otherwise the screen is just black).

Comment 3 Matěj Cepl 2008-09-11 07:25:09 UTC
You can start into runlevel 3 (when in Grub, press 'a' on the selected kernel you want to load, eliminate rhgb from the kernel command line and put 3 in its end), and then when the computer starts, login as normal user (i.e., no root) and run command startx

Comment 4 Joachim Deguara 2008-09-11 17:18:53 UTC
I can not start in runlevel 3, I tried but it brings me to the same menus and then crashes. THIS IS BOOTING OFF THE RAWHIDE INSTALL DISK. Please advise.

Sorry, I have a bit of trouble to understand you. So you are trying to install Fedora and anaconda crashes? Can you install in a text mode (write "linux text" on the anaconda command line on the first screen after booting from CD)?

If yes, could you please provide us with the information required in comment 1? If you cannot get to VT2, there is probably not much we can get from the installation itself, so information provided by the X server, is probably the best what we can hope for.

Comment 6 Joachim Deguara 2008-09-11 23:18:21 UTC
OK I have booted it in text mode and this is verified by a message in VT3, however it still crashes. VT2 is not interactive and therefore I can't get any other logs or debug information. On VT1 there is some messages about dbus.exceptions.DBusException and the "install exited abnormally [1/1]" and the rest is sadly history.

Comment 7 Matěj Cepl 2008-09-12 14:25:31 UTC
OK, reassigning to anaconda component, because apparently this has nothing to do with Xorg.
