Description Matt Castelein 2008-12-16 02:11:16 UTC
Description of problem:
I can't enable dual head on my desktop PC.. I've installed system-config-display (why is this not installed by default?) but when I go to enable it It will not let me choose any secondary adapter (list is blank) nor choose the same model display as display 1 (display 1 auto-detected, but the model not in the list for display 2)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
system-config-display-1.1.1-1.fc10.noarch

Additional information:
lspci gives me this, so at least I know the second display adapter is detected somewhere..
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR [Radeon 9600]
02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR [Radeon 9600] (Secondary)

Because it is almost depreceated -- you should be able to run Xorg without any xorg.conf at all and change the other settings with other (mostly xrandr-based) tools.

Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

xorg.conf

I'm sorry I didn't realize that system-config-display wasn't needed anymore.. I just didn't see any place to activate my second monitor, so I thought there must be some package missing.

Should I remove the system-config-display package from the system?

> Should I remove the system-config-display package from the system?

No, it doesn't do anything when not launched. For activating dual-head and stuff use gnome-display-properties available at System/Personal/Hardware/Display resolution. Does it help?

More info at http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f9/en_US/sn-Xorg.html and at http://udrepper.livejournal.com/20187.html

If all that doesn't let me know. I don't see anything wrong in your Xorg.0.log.

Comment 6 Matt Castelein 2008-12-24 02:23:06 UTC
xrandr -q shows this:

VGA-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm
.....
VGA-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

This is not correct. The monitor is connected and displays the POST until Fedora starts to load, then it goes blank.

gnome-display-properties shows only one monitor.

Modified xorg.conf

I tried changing my xorg.conf like this, based on the article, but all it got me was an unusable system.. Startup went as far as "starting anacron" and then.. nothing.. I had to log in via SSH again to change xorg.conf back. I am guessing this bug needs to be changed to something other than "system-config-display," but I am not sure what it should be.

Can we get /var/log/Xorg.0.log from unsuccesful attempt to start X, please?

> Can we get /var/log/Xorg.0.log from unsuccesful attempt to start X, please?

No, you can't, because X does not fail to start. It just won't let me use my second monitor.

Comment 10 Matěj Cepl 2009-01-10 10:02:13 UTC
what? Of course, I meant "unsuccessful" meaning "doesn't do what you want it to do" not "failes to start".

Comment 11 Matt Castelein 2009-01-10 15:39:26 UTC
My Xorg log is already attached to this bug.. I don't understand what you want me to do differently.

Xorg log, different video card

Tried this with another video card I had laying around, this time the second monitor is not blank, but instead is a mirror image of the first. I still cannot enable dual head, nor does turning of mirror displays do anything. I'm attaching the xorg log from this attempt, hopefully something useful in there..

Xorg log with TWO cards

Even adding a second card to the machine, I still cannot get dual head.

Second monitor

Unplugged, replugged, and re-detected second monitor.. The outline of the first one gets smaller as though it's making room for the second but it still does not show the second. Second monitor has lovely psychedelic display in this photo..

Second monitor again

This is how it looks at startup

xorg.conf with nvidia card

Hate to throw a wrench in the works, but I am not able to do dual head with an nvidia card either. The monitor resolution settings window looks just like the other image I already posted, with the one monitor off to the left like it's making space for a second, but there is no second. The second monitor is showing a mirror image of the first.

Comment 17 Matt Castelein 2009-01-24 02:33:42 UTC
Tried kmod-nvidia, in several flavors.. the rpmfusion one doesn't work because system-config-display won't start (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=477993) and the one from nvidia.com fails to install.. something about a make error 2? I've removed all that and also no longer have any xorg.conf, and I'm back where I started, with one good screen and one orange blinking pile of trash. Clearly this is NOT an xorg-x11-drv-ati bug either, because I'm not even using that.

Comment 18 Matt Castelein 2009-01-24 02:34:37 UTC
Mabye it's also worth noting that I tried this with Ubuntu and everything works perfecty.. But I can't stand Ubuntu!!

xorg.conf - Desparation

Why doesn't this work? I am at my wits' end.

Comment 20 Matt Castelein 2009-07-01 00:40:08 UTC
I got tired of waiting on this, and I'm no longer using Fedora on this box.. I'm closing this as WONTFIX, if anyone else has the same problem feel free to chime in.
