Description Paul W. Frields 2009-10-01 11:12:43 UTC
gnome-panel-2.28.0-1.fc12.x86_64

When I returned to my system this morning my notification area icons had disappeared. The applets are still running, and if I hover over the empty space I see their tooltips correctly. If I 'killall -HUP gnome-panel' the notification area in the regenerated panel appears properly again.

What's the best way for me to capture the problem overnight? strace the gnome-panel process and log the output?

so the notification-area-applet is still running,, just not redrawing anymore, right ? is this reproducible, does it happen every night ?

Comment 2 Paul W. Frields 2009-10-01 22:33:17 UTC
Correct, the notification-area-applet is still running and the applets are still running as well. I just noticed it this morning upon returning to the system. I can check to see if it happens again by tomorrow morning, since the system has been up all day at this point without a change.

I'll strace the n-a-applet for good measure.

Not sure thats going to shed much light on the problem.
This is most likely an instance of
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=588059
which has escaped all attempts to track it down, so far.

Lets treat this problem in bug 526670
