The assertion failure here is that a structure that represents an edge has an "edge type" value which isn't one of the allowed values - left/right/top/bottom. So this probably means that there's an "edge" in the list of edges which is just junk data. The question is how it got there. This bug is very hard to proceed on without instructions for reproducing - you'd basically have to review the entire edge resistance code base looking for errors. If anybody can get this to happen reproducibly, information about how to do that would be very useful.
Due to some good debugging work by Jon Nettleton, a GNOME Shell contributor, I've attached reproduction instructions and a patch upstream.
