What version of gtk2 are you seeing this with? I am seeing it neither with gtk2-2.18.6-1.fc12.i686 nor gtk2-2.18.6-2.fc12.i686. Does this happen for a newly-created user? (I'm wondering if there's some user-specific state in your dotfiles that is triggering the problem.)
