Description of problem: livecd-iso-to-disk can not be used on ext4 partitions, although ext4 is supported by Fedora (including grub). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): livecd-tools-031-1.fc12.1.x86_64
This package has changed ownership in the Fedora Package Database. Reassigning to the new owner of this component.
What are your results or errors when you use livecd-iso-to-disk on an ISO?
I don't remember seeing any errors. If I remember correctly, it complained that the partition wasn't ext2/ext3 or FAT. The source code[1] seems to confirm this. [1] http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=livecd;a=blob;f=tools/livecd-iso-to-disk.sh;h=f4d08553d9bfab55c80353434b9cbd41676f1dac;hb=d17704983b857889612a6963b6bd7ef456d12e2e#l229
extlinux doesn't support Ext4 yet, which is what we use on Ext filesystems. I did notice that there isn't even a createEXTFSLayout() function in livecd-iso-to-disk but that would only be applicable to using --format flag with the script. I suppose you could use Grub.. but until ext4 is supported in extlinux we can't use it. I'm not sure how long that is going to take however, I have been looking here: http://git.zytor.com/?p=users/liu/devel.git;a=summary If it doesn't move forward, I think we might want to convince the project leads to use Grub for Ext4. Does the maintainer of livecd-tools have any discussion they would want to present on using Grub for Ext4 if extlinux isn't moving forward? Seems like May of 2009 was the last changes to the repository I listed above.
Let me retract my previous comments, 4.02 does support Ext4 and BTRFS. It just seemed odd we've not had many syslinux updates from what I could see so I assumed from what I could find on the wiki for syslinux it wasn't supported. Clearly 4.00 supports Ext4: http://freshmeat.net/projects/syslinux pjones is the project maintainer for ext4, and as soon as we can see there is a syslinux update I have the patches here for livecd-iso-to-disk (only) which implement createEXTFSLayout when using --format flag and also the patches to add ext4 to the list of checks on msdos, vfat or ext2 ext3 filesystem types in livecd-iso-to-disk. If you can find an RFE in the bugzill on an update to syslinux, leaving a comment won't hurt. If you feel like compiling and installing syslinux 4.02 yourself and installing it before hand, I will go ahead and attach this patch for livecd-iso-to-disk for supporting the Ext4 filesystem on a USB stick.
Here is that upstream release update report also: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=609443
Created attachment 436736 [details] Support Ext4 devices for livecd-iso-to-disk (Needs syslinux-4.00 or greater) Applies clean against git of livecd-tools's livecd-iso-to-disk.
