RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description christoph.buchmann 2010-05-12 12:42:03 UTC
Description of problem:
Network installation of RHEL6 via a tftp-server (AIX 6.1 TL4 SP3) on an IBM 9117-MMA fails. The ppc64.img will be loaded, but then the system stops.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
RHEL 6 beta

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. On tftp-server copy the ppc64.img file to /tftpboot/
2. add following entry to /etc/bootptab:
   p6b:bf=/tftpboot/ppc64.img:ip=10.100.201.177:ht=ethernet:sa=10.100.201.4:sm=255.255.255.0
3. Select correct ethernet adapter as boot device in SMS

Actual results:
Error message saying 'No Operating Systems Installed'

Expected results:
Pre-system boot asking me for installation source

Additional info:
LPAR in an IBM Power 6 machine. I actually saw this behaviour already with FC12

Can you please checkout cobbler? See https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/PowerPc

Comment 4 Roman Rakus 2010-05-13 17:53:56 UTC
At the least, you shouldn't boot linux kernel directly from openfirmware. Please follow some guideline; for example http://wiki.ppckernel.org/w/Mac_Netboot

Here's the guideline I've followed:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/SG247940/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm
Chapter 4.10.1
and http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/LinuxP/Network+Installation

Worked like a charme for SLES, btw I didn't boot directly from openfirmware, but from SMS.

Cobbler isn't an alternative if you've an existing AIX-infrastructure and can use NIM.

Comment 6 Roman Rakus 2010-05-14 08:46:09 UTC
I see.
So the bug is not in yaboot, because you are not using it.

Comment 7 christoph.buchmann 2010-05-14 09:03:09 UTC
Correct.
