RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description R P Herrold 2010-10-05 19:18:56 UTC
Description of problem:

The X display backlight can be lost, and is not able to be recovered under certain common scenarios. The most obvious one is simply running: system-config-display. In some cases, when a new settings file is tested, the backlight is turned off, and not re-enabled.

===================

also it seems a brightness issue us being seen in this report:

Is this issues related to my problem, i.e. a new toshiba A665 laptop with intel built-in graphics, attempts to install CENTOS server 64 bit results in a black screen at the point of 'select language', if you look closely the screen is faintly visible at 1/10 brightness and if you squint hard enough you can give input (mouse etc is active) and the install dutifully proceeds to the 'partition selection' option.

Note:

looks like this may be some new feature bleeding through that Linux did not 'get the memo' on yet

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/539477 [^]
http://mjg59.livejournal.com/121851.html [^]

How reproducible:

1. Run: s.c.d
2. The backlight goes off
3. To recover, one has to ssh into the machine and reboot it, as one simply cannot read the screen

Steps to Reproduce:

   as above

Actual results:

Some Intel based laptop video chipsets of recent vintage have a problem with the backlighting not being sufficient (i.e., turned off) in some cases

When manually configured from a 'no prior /etc/X11/xorg.conf' state, low resolution configurations with adequate light can be produced.

When using s-c-d cannot get the backlight work at the end of the config, or a reconfig process

Noting this bug as a tracking point to run this down, to research froward from, and hopefully find a fix or workaround

Expected results:

desired: the backlight simply works in all cases unless explicity turned off (Xscreen saver type actions for power mgt, etc)

minimal: the backlight is at least minimally on [so that a recovery is possuble without rebooting the unit], and a preferred recovery process or tool documented

Additional info:

A. similar 'control of the display bugs here include: #468448 [Lenovo Thinkpad notebooks]
... this bug also implies a later: hal-info may help

B. The reporter on #470455 suggests toggling setting in: adjusting the
/sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/brightness flag (from 0 to 15)

C1. another bug #437267 suggests: recovered by switching to a VT,
logging in as root and executing:

export DISPLAY=:0
vbetool dpms on

[not possible here, due to the absence of backlight on. The local unit under test does not have a backlight come on with a switch into a lower VT ...] (impying yet another conponent in play -- probably 'kernel' as it controls the local display VT repaints, as I recall)

C2. It also suggests opening a X terminal and:

can you recover by doing 'xset dpms force on' from within the X
session? (yes, blindly)

again, not possible as one cannot see where to 'mouse to' to fall within a console window ... something like: F2 konsol <tab> [enter] <on the OK> [position indeterminate] ... cannot run the xset ;(

D. The rebase in #432404 (rhel 5.1) is assumedly fully present, and so no joy there

E. The intel drivers seem to be something of a moving target, as the problem of #244933 seems partially relevant here as to a regression slipping in (although, with no backlight, a differing issue)

F. The close of #556385 seems to be a close of an open issue for non-technical reasons (timing) rather than after a fix -- I would clone and reopen it, but it is not my precise case

Endnote:

I file this after seeing a Fedora thread today on this general topic of Intel i810 drivers, and certainly understand that Intel provides lots of ship variations, and so makes for a moving target. Perhaps some more formal form of drivers updates program is needed? -- I see folks in a couple of the bugs asking for access to testing released on the enterprise platform

If you need specifics, please ask and I will supply as I can

Comment 1 Matěj Cepl 2010-10-06 13:28:16 UTC
Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, reproduce the issue, and attach

* your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available),
* X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)
* output of the dmesg command, and
* system log (/var/log/messages)

to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above.

And for the record, no I don't think it has anything to do with Super+p silliness ... I don't see anything about backlight there (and any code from any solution which needs to be written yet certainly hasn't come to RHEL-6, even less to RHEL-5).

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log after the backlight is lost bug before Xorg is restarted (collect it either via ssh or restart to runlevel 3) would be very helpful as well.

Thank you

Actually, your computer uses VESA driver not i810. Switching the component.

Comment 21 R P Herrold 2010-11-01 18:56:18 UTC
noted -- thanks

Comment 22 R P Herrold 2010-12-13 04:34:21 UTC
Stripping the machine down to a fresh install, and reinstalling, I get the loss of backlight when the i810 driver package is present

Removing that package, cleaning away prior config files, and re-running s-c-d, I am offered 800x600, but at least the display does not get irrevocably turned off

That said, xdpyinfo reports:

  dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (342x191 millimeters)
  resolution: 76x102 dots per inch
  depths (7): 24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32

This problem persists after the 5.6 updates .. any chance for a fix?

Comment 25 R P Herrold 2012-01-12 19:49:44 UTC
we find this issue on this same hardware, in the latest kernels in RHEL 6, in that the backlight is not toggled on in 6.2 .... it was fine in 6.0 is this possibly a kernel issue in play>

Comment 26 Adam Jackson 2013-11-05 19:15:18 UTC
Moving to RHEL6, no further X driver updates are planned for RHEL5.

Comment 28 Adam Jackson 2014-05-07 16:28:20 UTC
Reporter, are you still seeing this in 6.5?

Comment 29 R P Herrold 2014-05-07 19:34:11 UTC
yes ...

I adopted a workaround of an initscript to toggle the backlight on, but eventually THAT stopped working as well

I can set up VPN access into the unit for you if you wish to have it

-- Russ herrold

Comment 30 R P Herrold 2014-05-07 19:36:12 UTC
My workaround has been to simply retain an ancient kernel in the 6 series to boot into
