I have the display settings applet running, and was doubling clicking on that.
It triggered a crash in both that applet and nm-applet - possibly due to some of my mouse clicks being redirected to nm-applet once the display applet crashed.
Abrt shows it was gnome-settings-daemon that crashed rather than the display applet reported as #655516
