Rebooted system (after other software was also installed) 3. started chess through the menu option Comment ----- I have an ATI Rradeon HD 5830 card driving two monitors. At launch, the one monitor appears to do something (i.e. background disappears and screen fades to black) very briefly ( < 1 sec ), then the crash message appears. Also tried running it from the shell and get same result. I could submit the contents of the shell if you need it. Here's the last few lines of it: Skeleton: Loading Hand.skeleton Can't assign material Hand to SubEntity of Hand0 because this Material does not exist. All I have to do is try to load the program Comment ----- I don't know what is causing this, I used yum to install it, and any dependancies should already be resolved. I can look through the logs if I know which one(s) to look at, but for me it wouldn't mean much! For the developer, it may mean a lot more. If the bug report is not sufficient just let me know what else, if anything, that you guys may need.
Some of these I suspect are video card support issues rather than just chess. The other big issue with chess is that upstream is dead and it no longer runs at all for anyone in F15 because the media files aren't compatible with the updated ogre stuff. I had been planning to work on a fork, but I need to do a lot of learning first and with other Fedora stuff I am working on it isn't going to happen soon.
So, it would seem I'm not the ONLY one having this problem. Almost all other games run good with this card, but that very well could be the issue anyway. I wouldn't be surprised at anything that happens in the GUI any more!

I keep trying this every so often, hoping that maybe the author has fixed it. I just did a lot of updates, but I don't know if this package was included. Comment ----- All I ever do is try to start the program, but it always dies immediately, even before I see any kind of screen. I have no idea if this runs on any Linux box, but I have seen MANY bug reports about this program. If I could make any suggestions, I would, but I don't even know what language it's written in. Probably C/C++ or maybe even Java, neither of which I am really good at.
Chess upstream is dead. I want to try to look at a friendly fork, but I have had higher priority Fedora stuff to work on and haven't gotten to it yet. The upstream media stuff no longer works correctly with the current ogre library. For the abort stuff you are seeing, it can make a difference what type of video support you chose when you first ran chess. Some combinations of video cards and modes don't work, but others do. You don't get asked this each time you run chess. The config file for this is in your .chess directory.

This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX. (Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.) Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were unable to fix it before Fedora 14 reached end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
