Description Travis Gummels 2011-01-19 22:01:59 UTC
1. Customer Name

LLNL

2. What is the nature and description of the request?

Enable DHCP server server support for Infiniband IPoIB.

3. Why does the customer need this? (List the business requirements here)

LLNL makes extensive use of Infiniband in their environment. They desire the increased addressing/configuration flexibility DHCP could provide for their IPoIB infrastructure.

4. How would the customer like to achieve this? (List the functional requirements here):

Red Hat make appropriate code updates to the dhcp server.

5. For each functional requirement listed in question 4, specify how Red
Hat and the customer can test to confirm the requirement is successfully
implemented.

Install dhcp server package in LLNL environment (Red Hat has access to nodes in the hyperion cluster which uses mellanox cards) and attempt to configure infiniband card with DHCP.

6. Is there already an existing RFE upstream or in Red Hat bugzilla?

The following is as close to an upstream RFE and or RH BZ as I could find.

OFED :
http://www.openfabrics.org/downloads/OFED/ofed-1.4/OFED-1.4-docs/ipoib_release_notes.txt

For IPoIB to use DHCP, you must patch ISC's DHCP. The patch file can be
found under OFED-1.3/docs/dhcp after extracting the distribution file.
(After installation it can also be found under <prefix>/docs/dhcp.) The
patch should be applied for the server and for each client. Tests were run
on version 3.0.4 of the DHCP package.

BZ 590578 Comment 9 2010-05-14 :

IPoIB: This is just bringing up an IB interface with a TCP network address.
Currently we only support static IP configuration because the dhcp server we
ship can't process IPoIB packets. There is finally some work happening
upstream to resolve the dhcp server issue (the problem is that our dhcp server
really must be compiled to use the mmaped ring buffer method of packet
gathering that the kernel supports for performance reasons, but this method
uses too small of a sockaddr_ll struct and so we don't get the entire hardware
address of IPoIB interfaces when doing things this way), but as it's not in
place yet static configuration is the best we could do.

BZ 569547 Comment 3 2010-10-05 :

To support RHEL installation over IB (IPoIB) DHCP server and client should be
updated with IPoIB support as well. We are going to submit DHCP patches to RedHat and once they will be accepted installation over IPoIB will be supported.

BZ 569547 Comment 4 2010-10-05 :

... You also need a separate bugzilla request for dhcp server/client support.

7. How quickly does this need resolved? (desired target release)

6.1

8. Does this request meet the RHEL Inclusion criteria (please review)

yes

9. List the affected packages

dhcp-12.P1.el6_0.1

Vladimir Sokolovsky from Mellanox promised to provide a patch for DHCP soon.

I think this bug can be closed as duplicate of bug #660681.

Comment 3 Travis Gummels 2011-01-20 15:54:17 UTC
Agreed, this should be closed out as a duplicate of 660681.

Thank you,
