I had symptoms of this type after a not very smooth upgrade to fedora 14 from fedora 13. In my case the problem was alleviated by changing various permissions in sub-directories of the user home directories: .gnome; .gnome2; .gconf; .gconfd; Perhaps my experience will be helpful.
