Description of problem: when performing an init 1 from konsole, the system switch to a unusable state. Sreen becomes black (the monitor ligh blinks, so it seems like dpms or similar). No tty works. Ctrl alt del seems to not to work or is very slow. Must press RESET button. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): systemd.x86_64 20-1.fc15 @updates-testing systemd-units.x86_64 20-1.fc15 @updates-testing kernel 2.6.38-1.fc15.x86_64 How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. open konsole 2. su - 3. init 1 Actual results: blank screen, no tty, waited some minutes and nothing. ctrl alt del seems not to work. Expected results: single user or some error at least. Additional info:

ok, i found that init 1 by itself is not the problem. It happens when: * a previous init 3 hits the bug (so tty1 is unusable & it seems it remains so) "Bug 688661 - Performing 'init 3' from konsole [via su -] works, but tty1 is unusable (others are fine)" * using tty2, an init 5 is performed. * after that, from konsole, an init 1 is performed.
If using a serial port console, it is different, there is no black screen (no-signal). I can se the output (cannot type anything, but it may be the cable pinouts issue) Serial console output form: * boot * rl5: konsole: init 3 * rl3 (with tty1 unusable): init 5 * rl5: konsole: init 1 * rl1 (cannot type anything) CTRL+ALT+DEL * reboot. ---- selinux is configured to permissibe in order to be able to boot (another bug/issue) ----- [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpu [ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.38-1.fc15.x86_64 (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org) (gcc version 4.6.0 20110304 (Red Hat 4.6.0-0.12) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Tue Mar 15 05:29:00 UTC 2011 [ 0.000000] Command line: ro root=UUID=299fdf32-a96c-4ac3-9e3d-5db83735d6ce rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_LVM rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYTABLE=es console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600n8 [ 0.000000] BIOS-provided physical RAM map: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009e000 (usable) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000000009e000 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000000e3000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 00000000cff90000 (usable) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000cff90000 - 00000000cffa8000 (ACPI data) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000cffa8000 - 00000000cffe0000 (ACPI NVS) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000cffe0000 - 00000000d0000000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec01000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fef00000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fff00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000100000000 - 0000000230000000 (usable) [ 0.000000] NX (Execute Disable) protection: active [ 0.000000] DMI present. Hmm, does the system get back on its feet after 3min? Or does it stay stuck for good? (This probably is caused by some process still having open the tty.)
No, it does not return. (and i discovered nature of the refusal to come back!) The reason is that Xorg crashes when performing an 'init 1' form xorg/kde. I noticed that if i swith to RL1 from any vt (non-xorg) it works. Then i enabled sshd for single-user, and then 'init 1' form xorg. Then i recovered Xorg.0.log from the affected system. It had indeed reached RL1, but Xorg crashed and the display is unusable. Sadly, there is no backtrace... it ends there. ?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log [ 22.519] X.Org X Server 1.10.0 Release Date: 2011-2-25 [ 22.526] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 22.526] Build Operating System: x86-15 2.6.32-71.14.1.el6.x86_64 [ 22.526] Current Operating System: Linux ulquiorra.espada 2.6.38.2-9.fc15.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Mar 30 16:55:57 UTC 2011 x86_64 [ 22.527] Kernel command line: ro root=UUID=299fdf32-a96c-4ac3-9e3d-5db83735d6ce rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_LVM rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYTABLE=es rhgb quiet drm.debug=0x04 [ 22.527] Build Date: 30 March 2011 08:08:16PM [ 22.527] Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.10.0-7.fc15 [ 22.538] Current version of pixman: 0.20.2 [ 22.538] Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Ah, hmm, seems X chokes on EIO from /dev/console. This probably has to do with the bkl removal in the kernel tty layer. The right fix is for X to loop around tty handling, as explained here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554172/comments/245

Tried again, since there were several updates to all involved packages to see if the situation improved or not. It did improve, at least a bit. FROM KONSOLE (logged as user and su -): # chkconfig --leve 12345 sshd on in order to do a proper reboot, in case that the black-screen appears. # chkconfig --list | grep sshd Note: This output shows SysV services only and does not include native systemd services. SysV configuration data might be overridden by native systemd configuration. sshd 0:off 1:on 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off # init 1 * Dracut screen, fedora logo completes and just stays like that... PRO: No more black-screen, CTRL+ALT+DEL can be used to properly reboot the system. CON: sshd in runlevel 1 no longer works (could not log in from my laptop). FROM SSH ROOT LOGIN (AND NO USER LOGGED IN THE SYSTEM): # init 1 * It reaches single-user CON: sshd in runlevel 1 does not work? In this case, i can verify that: * chkconfig shows that sshd is enabled for runlevel 1 * systemctl -a shows that sshd.service is loaded/active * ps aux shows that the binary is being executed. still i get: ssh: connect to host XXXX: No route to host on both the remote laptop and on the console (using localhost). --- on the original subject of the bugreport: * init 1 from remote ssh with no logged users works. * init 1 from konsole (a logged user) does not work, but no more black-screen) * no more black-screen and forced reset, the fedora logo at least permits using CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot. (but nothing more can be done). on the sshd issue, is a new bugreport needed? systemd.x86_64 26-5.fc15 @updates systemd-sysv.x86_64 26-5.fc15 @updates systemd-units.x86_64 26-5.fc15 @updates sysvinit-tools.x86_64 2.88-3.dsf.fc15 @koji-override-0/ dbus.x86_64 1:1.4.6-4.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus-glib.x86_64 0.92-2.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus-libs.i686 1:1.4.6-4.fc15 @fedora dbus-libs.x86_64 1:1.4.6-4.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus-python.x86_64 0.83.0-8.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus-x11.x86_64 1:1.4.6-4.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbusmenu-qt.x86_64 0.6.3-3.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever xorg-x11-server-Xephyr.x86_64 1.10.2-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.10.2-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-common.x86_64 1.10.2-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-utils.x86_64 7.5-5.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever xorg-x11-drv-ati.x86_64 6.14.1-2.20110525gitfe5c42f51.fc15 @updates
(In reply to comment #10) > CON: sshd in runlevel 1 no longer works (could not log in from my laptop). It never did. There is no network in runlevel 1.
Ok, it seems i forgot to configure the service network for runlevel 1, it works now. thanks. by the way, i tried again (init 1) and got the black-screen (from remote ssh)... so the black-screen did not go away... but... In fact, i tried again and there was no black-screen. The black-screen returned when i tried while the display was in dpms.
Today, i tested both current F15 and F16 (rc5). They both were able to correclty go to single-user (# init 1) They both were able to go back to multi-user mode (# init 5) For F15, my current versions: systemd.x86_64 26-10.fc15 @updates systemd-sysv.x86_64 26-10.fc15 @updates systemd-units.x86_64 26-10.fc15 @updates sysvinit-tools.x86_64 2.88-3.dsf.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus.x86_64 1:1.4.6-5.fc15 @updates dbus-glib.x86_64 0.92-2.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus-libs.i686 1:1.4.6-5.fc15 @updates dbus-libs.x86_64 1:1.4.6-5.fc15 @updates dbus-python.x86_64 0.83.0-8.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever dbus-x11.x86_64 1:1.4.6-5.fc15 @updates dbusmenu-qt.x86_64 0.6.3-3.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever python-slip-dbus.noarch 0.2.17-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-Xephyr.x86_64 1.10.4-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.10.4-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-common.x86_64 1.10.4-1.fc15 @updates xorg-x11-server-utils.x86_64 7.5-5.fc15 @koji-override-0/$releasever xorg-x11-drv-ati.x86_64 6.14.1-2.20110525gitfe5c42f51.fc15 @updates I will test it again in the following days, but it seems fixed. This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX. (Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.) Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
