The problem is very sporadic, and the exact cause is hard to identify. After using pulseaudio with a USB headset over a number of hours, it will occasionally crash.

Comment 5 Daniel Hansen 2011-07-13 04:55:32 UTC
At least for me, this problem appears to be caused by a failed assertion:

pulseaudio[2332]: sink-input.c: Assertion 'tchunk.memblock' failed at pulsecore/sink-input.c:671, function pa_sink_input_peek(). Aborting.

However, the crux of the problem seems to be ALSA-related. The following line appears dozens of times in my pulseaudio log:

Jul 11 22:09:34 danbo pulseaudio[1755]: alsa-sink.c: Failed to set hardware parameters: Input/output error

I also see the following message a few times:

Jul 12 21:24:49 danbo pulseaudio[2332]: alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device front:2: No such file or directory
Jul 12 21:24:49 danbo pulseaudio[2332]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink input: sink is suspended.

The common thread that I can think of here is that the 2 of us who have reported this issue are using USB sound devices. Is is possible that the USB link is being suspended and not waking up in time?

Comment 6 Theodore Lee 2011-07-13 05:28:56 UTC
Hmm... well for me this crash did occur shortly after a suspend/resume cycle. I can't remember if I plugged in the headset before or after resuming though.

Comment 7 Daniel Hansen 2011-07-13 06:07:51 UTC
I have a theory about what's happening. For me, the problems occur, regardless of a suspend/resume. When I was talking about suspend I was more referring to the kernel's usb power management. I think what's happening is this:

1. The pulseaudio suspend-on-idle module is closing the sound device
2. The kernel senses that the usb device is no longer in use and decides to put it to sleep.
3. A little later, pulseaudio tries to re-open the sound device, but it is suspended, so it gets the Input/output error that I mentioned above.
4. Once this happens a number of times, things seem to get out of sync, and pulseaudio crashes on a failed assertion.

Comment 8 Daniel Hansen 2011-07-13 06:10:24 UTC
By the way, I've been testing this theory in part by disabling the suspend-on-idle module in pulseaudio. You can do the same by the following steps:

1. cp /etc/pulse/default.pa ~/.pulse/
2. edit ~/.pulse/default.pa and comment out the following line:
   load-module module-suspend-on-idle
3. run pulseaudio -k to restart pulseaudio with the new config

If my theory is correct, pulseaudio will never suspend the device when idle, and the kernel will never put the usb device to sleep, as it will always be in use.

Comment 9 Theodore Lee 2011-07-13 09:26:33 UTC
All right, thanks, I'll take a shot at testing this. I can't reproduce the crash very often though, so it may be a while before I see anything.

I was playing sound through a bluetooth headset, and the headset ran out of battery. This caused pulseaudio to crash.

Comment 25 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 16:57:29 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
