Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 742465
No certain fonts available in KDE Live spin
Last modified: 2011-09-30 05:47:28 EDT
Description of problem:
KDE Live spin doesn't contain the fonts packages that is supposed to be installed by default in the fonts group in comps.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot up KDE Live
2.rpm -q vlgothic-fonts say
should be available according to the fonts group in comps
As I explained in bug #742464, the CD-sized KDE spin only contains very limited i18n support for space reasons. We do try hard to ship fonts to cover the full Unicode area so users can read help pages in their language (e.g. HOWTOs for installing the missing i18n pieces). And thus, we do, in fact, use the @fonts group.
HOWEVER, there was just no way we were able to fit 3 huge fonts all covering the same (huge) CJK Unified Ideographs range in different national styles. We had the choice between 2 options:
a. don't support CJK Unified Ideographs at all,
b. try to support them, by shipping 1 medium-sized (i.e. as small as possible for such a huge character range) font to cover that area.
We picked option b. and decided to ship the smallest CJK font package available, wqy-microhei-fonts.
Sorry, but as I said, it was that or no CJK support at all.
