Workaround in 734442 works for me: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734442 Posts 49 and 51 there...
Package: alacarte-0.13.2-3.fc16 Architecture: i686 OS Release: Fedora release 16 (Verne) It worked for me! https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734442 Notice that the Fedora 17 (development) / 15 / Rawhide versions of alacarte / gnome-panel do not work for it: Only the .so files are manually incorporated by melting the fc15.i686.rpm file.(Do not rpm --erase nor yum erase the gnome-menu*.fc16 or alacarte*.fc16.) Note, however, that I downloaded the i686 version (not 64bit) of genome-menu-3.0.1.-1 from the mirror server: http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/Fedora/releases/15/Everything/i386/os/Packages/ Then: [root@localhost ダウンロード]# rpm2cpio gnome-menus-3.0.1-1.fc15.i686.rpm | cpio -ivd [root@localhost ダウンロード]# cp ./usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gmenu.so /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gmenu.so [root@localhost ダウンロード]# cp ./usr/lib/libgnome-menu.so.2.4.13 /usr/lib/libgnome-menu.so.2.4.13 [root@localhost ダウンロード]# ln ./usr/lib/libgnome-menu.so.2 /usr/lib/libgnome-menu.so.2 [root@localhost ダウンロード]# alacarte

Install fedora 16 or upgrade from fc15. # yum install alacarte # alacarte you have to steal 3 python files from fedora 15 and put them in /usr/lib64 to make it work. This was reported against rawhide on bugzilla.redhat.com (=734442) in August. Please have python team fix their libs or cut alacarte from the repo if their RPM dependencies are wrong. When I first migrated from Gnome to XFCE, alacarte worked fine under XFCE. Now, it crashes, as reported above. When it's working, it's the best menu editor I've found. Unlike the one recommended for XFCE, it doesn't need to run with root privileges and you don't have to log out and back in to see your changes. Alacarte is a valuable program and shouldn't be abandoned simply because it's not intended to work under Gnome 3. (I'm not saying that's the dev's intention, but the above comment implies that it might be.)
yes, i miss alacarte too. if it does not work, it should not be shipped. shipping broken packages sucks.

You can fix alacarte (by now, until it is fixed upstream) following these steps: $ wget http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/15/Fedora/x86_64/os/Packages/gnome-menus-3.0.1-1.fc15.x86_64.rpm $ rpm2cpio gnome-menus-3.0.1-1.fc15.x86_64.rpm | cpio -iv $ cd usr/share/lib64 $ sudo cp libgnome-menu.so.2.4.13 /usr/lib64/ $ sudo ln -s /usr/lib64/libgnome-menu.so.2.4.13 /usr/lib64/libgnome-menu.so.2 $ sudo cp python2.7/site-packages/gmenu.so /usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/ $ alacarte & (Source: http://blog.mclaughlinsoftware.com/2011/11/24/gnome-menu-editing-fix/) hth, Germán.
Is there an equivalent fix for those of us not using x86_64? Quite a few of the reports here are from people with 32 bit systems, and I hope we're not being ignored.

I'm not sure Joe...maybe if you download the 32-bits package and put the library in /usr/lib... I only discovered this fix in the site whose link I posted before.

meanwhile this bug is fixed, i've found a hack: http://blog.mclaughlinsoftware.com/2011/11/24/gnome-menu-editing-fix/ is sometime about old symlinks. Regards!
The comment in #168 above, solved the problem (except you need to be in the appropriate directory before you apply the symlink!). Alacarte now works fine in xfce (as one would normally expect), In 'Comment #163, I should have mentioned I was using xfce rather than GNOME 3 (I was previously a power GNOME 2 user...).

I already gave detailed steps to fix the problem in comment #153 above :)
Germán Racca: Very sorry, I was too lazy to read all the comments! :-) surely $ cd usr/share/lib64 should be $ cd /usr/share/lib6 ?
Actually, you don't need to cd there at all. With the paths specified in the link command, the change directory command is superfluous.
From #153: $ rpm2cpio gnome-menus-3.0.1-1.fc15.x86_64.rpm | cpio -iv $ cd usr/share/lib64 $ sudo cp libgnome-menu.so.2.4.13 /usr/lib64/ The 'cd' only works if you are in '/', which is why I suggested prefacing 'usr' a '/', hence I think it should be 'cd /usr/share/lib64' - I was assuming that you are in your home directory, or some such. Though I did not check the whole sequence, as I had already fixed the problem and I avoid sudo for security reasons (the security of sudo is illusory - if people already know your password, allowing sudo is a security risk as it uses your normal password and not the root password).
(In reply to comment #172) > Germán Racca: Very sorry, I was too lazy to read all the comments! :-) Hey no problem, I'm lazy too :) > surely > $ cd usr/share/lib64 > should be > $ cd /usr/share/lib6 > ? If you extract the rpm as follows: $ rpm2cpio gnome-menus-3.0.1-1.fc15.x86_64.rpm | cpio -ivd Then in the current directory you will have usr/ and etc/, the content of the rpm package you have just extracted, then you cd to usr/share/lib64 and copy libgnome-menu.so.2.4.13 to /usr/lib64 as superuser. All the best, Germán.

@Rustronix (#225)... it's called Main Menu, and for some reason they moved it from 'System' to the 'Other' category. But it's probably still broke until you follow the directions to fix it. Scroll up - the link to the blog that gives step-by-step directions is in #153, 168, 169, 184, et al.
Tried to start "start" menu in xfce. Package: alacarte-0.13.2-3.fc16 OS Release: Fedora release 16 (Verne)
Setting priority and severity to urgent. The application simply doesn't work. Ray, can you please have a look at it and either remove the package from Fedora if it's not going to be fixed, or work on a fix (with upstream if needed)? Thanks.
