Hi There,

Sounds to me like the cups service is not running on your machine, can you confirm that after running this command as root:

systemctl start cups.service

That print manager now displays your printers?

Comment 2 Paul Lambert 2011-11-10 14:34:48 UTC
Yes, the command line in comment 1 did start cups and the printer is now displayed when I open the system print app. However, there is another bug related to this problem that being the inability to open of the Services application. Therefore, I could not use the GUI to start the cups service. This bug was auto-reported as 752636.

Should I modify a file to launch the cups service at startup? Or, will a new package release correct this?

Comment 3 Jake Shipton 2011-11-10 14:59:12 UTC
Hi there,

Try using chkconfig to enable cups at boot as root using command:

chkconfig cups on

That should start cups at boot. As far as I'm aware you should not need to modify any files for this.

From what you've said, it would appear that during upgrade the cups daemon was disabled at boot, and re-enabling it should fix this. Please let me know if it does.

As for your service manager bug, I do not think the two are linked. I have just tried to open services on my Fedora 16 x86_64 and it opened just fine. I will leave the other bug intact and unmodified as I myself do not know the cause of the problem.

The command line in comment 3 worked. On reboot the cups service was confirmed to be running.

Comment 5 Jake Shipton 2011-11-10 16:32:24 UTC
Hi,

I will be closing this now, as it would appear the issue was merely a service not enabled at boot and can be fixed using the command specified in comment 3 and comment 1.

From my own testing I also found that my cups was in fact disabled as well, so I can confirm it gets disabled after an upgrade from Fedora 15, to Fedora 16.

As for bug #752636 I would say it is completely unrelated to this bug.

Thank you for reporting the issue, I am sure this will help others who run into this problem and search for a solution :-).
