Pinged ath9k-devel for some help...
It seems that this is somehow related (or the same) to the https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=698978 I do have a horribly slow connection and initially didn't think that it is related to the wifi and kernel panics. The workaround suggested there namely rmmod ath9k modprobe ath9k nohwcrypt=1 does work for me and did speed-up the connection ~x10 times, but also it seems to stop the crashes.
