RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Daniel Kinon 2012-09-12 21:45:03 UTC
Description of problem:
I did also some measurement and the ALSA HDA driver tests to eliminate the pops caused by the volume changes (volume slider changes) using a mixer application.

I believe that this issue is related directly to hardware and hardware vendor should be asked, why changing of the volume in the HDA audio codec causes pops in the analog output. I can reproduce the clicks with some hardware, but other hardware does not suffer from this issue. I verified the driver and I do not see any problems there. Also, I wrote a script changing the volume periodically using direct HDA codec writes and the pops are there (for some HDA codec types), too.

Perhaps, there might be a vendor specific workaround to set the volume without clicks outside the HDA specification from Intel, but also in this case, the hardware vendor (HDA codec vendor, PC vendor) might be asked to provide this information.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64

How reproducible:
Easily on HP onboard sound.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Move volume slider up and donw to change audio volume.

Actual results:
Volume change with crackling/popping.

Expected results:
Volume change with no crackling/popping.

Additional info:
Still narrowing down other affected hardware

Comment 1 Jaroslav Kysela 2012-09-13 14:53:15 UTC
The affected platforms are HP Z400 and HP Z800 (the ALC268 audio codec). Also, I can reproduce this behaviour (clicks) using Lenovo T61 laptop (the AD1984 audio codec).

This request was not resolved in time for the current release.
Red Hat invites you to ask your support representative to
propose this request, if still desired, for consideration in
the next release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Hey Jaroslav,
Given the importance of this request and it getting nacked for 6.4, can you please nominate this request for 6.4.z?
Thanks,
-Dan

Comment 7 Jaroslav Kysela 2013-05-20 08:20:02 UTC
Actually, there is no solution for these issues as far as I know. The click issues may be related to the hardware implementation. I would keep this bug for a reference and for future comments.
