Description Joel Uckelman 2012-11-13 12:32:49 UTC
Description of problem:

gdm shows the login dialog on LVDS despite that the laptop lid is closed when my wife's ThinkPad X200s is connected to an external monitor on VGA1. This makes logging in to X very inconvenient when docked.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

gdm-3.4.1-3.fc17.x86_64

How reproducible:

Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot with laptop on dock and lid closed.

Actual results:

Login dialog is displayed on laptop instead of external monitor.

Expected results:

Login dialog should never be displayed the laptop panel when the lid is closed if there is an external monitor connected.

Additional info:

This comment on Bug 867573 provides a workaround, but getting the login dialog on the right screen should not require any user intervention:

This happens in Fedora 18 as well. Should I file a separate bug report about that, or is this comment sufficient?

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 03:13:42 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 3 Randy Barlow 2013-07-04 15:04:31 UTC
Changing the version to F18, as it still happens in that release. I have not yet upgraded to F19 to test it there.

Comment 4 thohai 2013-08-06 07:14:33 UTC
Please change the version to F19 it still happens there (TP X201s) and external monitor connected via docking station. (DisplayPort)

Comment 5 Michael Chapman 2013-10-01 12:57:16 UTC
I can confirm the same problem on Fedora 20, with:

  gdm-3.10.0-1.fc20.x86_64

It looks like this has been reported upstream at:

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=709062

The workaround there -- copying ~/.config/monitors.xml into ~gdm/.config/ -- seems to work for me, but obviously this should not be necessary.

Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this

This still happens on Fedora 22.
