Description of problem: I have two monitors, one an old Compaq W17q whose EDI is unreadable. (It is older, I believe, that the checksum standard.) That monitor is correctly configured in my xorg.conf file. The other monitor is an Acer 22" which is correctly detected and configured. When the problem occured, I had used the MATE monitor tool to position the W17q display to the left of the Acer one, speified that eache display had separate images, and closed the tool. Probably not relavent, but this is the first time I've tried MATE. I mostly run in KDE, and the KDE monitor setup app had no problems.
