Got this when looking at some files on a Sammy Galaxy 3 4G via Gnome3's UI. Workaround: After removing the device, waiting a little while and then re-attaching, my desktop didn't seem to want to know about trying to mount it again. Whilst taking a look at debug info I tried switching the phone to USB PTP mode and back to USB MTP. The desktop decided it was there after all.

Description of problem: I had been running qemu-kvm with a WindowsXP guest. I performed the Windows Update and successfully installed all fo the updates and rebooted the guest system, as requested. This kernel error occurred when the guest system rebooted. I had been trying to get the Sony Walkman to work in the guest system. Prior to the reboot, I had manually entered the command usb_all host:VendorID:DeviceID. I'm not sure if this had anything to do with the problem, since I rebooted the guest, as I had just said. *********** MASS BUG UPDATE ************** We apologize for the inconvenience. There is a large number of bugs to go through and several of them have gone stale. Due to this, we are doing a mass bug update across all of the Fedora 19 kernel bugs. Fedora 19 has now been rebased to 3.11.1-200.fc19. Please test this kernel update and let us know if you issue has been resolved or if it is still present with the newer kernel. If you experience different issues, please open a new bug report for those.
I'm not sure, because I delete bug reports from reporting tool when I see that this bug is already reported. I may ping to those bugs I'll see next time. So you may probably close the bug and wait for reopening?
This bug is being closed with INSUFFICIENT_DATA as there has not been a response in 2 weeks. If you are still experiencing this issue, please reopen and attach the relevant data from the latest kernel you are running and any data that might have been requested previously.
The bug is still present at 3.11.6-200.fc19.x86_64. The bug shows up when machine wakes up from hibernation.
Maybe a dupe Bug 1024660

Happened again, kernel now is 3.12.8-300.fc20.x86_64
This actually seems to be a bug on user space driver which not correctly call usbdev_ioctl( USBDEVFS_CLEAR_HALT ) when the endpoint did not stall. On the kernel we can just remove the WARNING, but this probably should be fixed in proper place. Though, I'm not sure which component should be assigned.
I'll ask upstream if we can remove that warning ...

I have just reproduced the bug again with a Galaxy Note II and captured ps aux output since I plugged the phone to abrt warning poping up and: * no process named "pool" was started * that line appears at backtrace ./backtrace:4:CPU: 1 PID: 3613 Comm: pool Not tainted 3.12.10-300.fc20.x86_64 #1 * that line appears at dmesg "[ 645.688435] CPU: 1 PID: 3613 Comm: pool Not tainted 3.12.10-300.fc20.x86_64 #1" * a `which`command showed no pool executable in path * a full system scan - sudo find / -type f -executable -name "pool" - showed no pool executable * a full system glob search - sudo find / -type f -executable -name "*pool*" - showed applications that i don't think are related to the bug but here they are: /usr/lib64/samba/libcli_spoolss.so /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/libdbpool2.so /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/libi18npoollo.so /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/gcry_whirlpool.module /usr/bin/smbspool The only processes that showed up while plugin and unplugin the phone was: /usr/libexec/gnome-shell-hotplug-sniffer /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-journald /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udevd /usr/libexec/gvfsd-mtp /usr/libexec/gvfsd-http --spawner /usr/sbin/abrtd -d -s /usr/bin/abrt-watch-log /usr/bin/abrt-dump-oops
Iago, did you dump "ps aux" output to a file? Is there pid 3613 ? If not, what are numbers of other processes?
There were no pid 3613 in the ps output. 265 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-journald 3203 /usr/libexec/gvfsd-mtp 3420 /usr/libexec/gnome-shell-hotplug-sniffer 3203 /usr/libexec/gvfsd-http 3979 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-udevd 580 /usr/sbin/abrtd 587 /usr/bin/abrt-watch-log 587 /usr/bin/abrt-dump-oops I was able to reproduce this today again, so it looks like I can just trigger the bug at will just plugin and unplugin the Note II. If you want me to run any log script or anything you want in this machine and try to trigger it just tell me. Don't hesitate to send me instructions by mail of you need it. I will try to help as much as I can.
Ok, please do the following as root: mount -t debugfs debugfs /sys/kernel/debug/ cd /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/ echo 1 > events/sched/sched_process_fork/enable echo 1 > events/sched/sched_process_exec/enable echo 1 > events/sched/sched_process_exit/enable cat trace_pipe | tee ~/process_trace.txt Check if events are logged, then reproduce the problem, check if pid of pool process is logged into process_trace.txt. Stop tracing by Ctrl+C, attach the file here and provide information about which pid this time cause the warning.
Created attachment 863613 [details] Process trace Process trace showing the pool process spawning from
Sorry for the delay but, as always, now I want to trigger the bug it does not pops. Anyway the processes that spawn the pool process - during a successful not-bugged plug and unplug - are: gnome-shell-hot(plug) gvfsd-mtp Attached there up is a non-bug trigger process trace that shows the pool process spawning from those processes. I'am still trying to get that bug trace to post it here.
BTW, it is possible that "pool" is not the name of an executable at all, but could be set as the process/thread name by something using pthread_setname_np or prctl(PR_SET_NAME).
Thanks. Poll process call is from gvfsd-mtp, but that program does not do usb directly, but via libmtp, and this is component where the bug should be fixed.
As discussed in this thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.usb.general/103062 , libmtp does not use usb_clear_halt() correctly. It should first stop any pending transfers. Not doing that is a bug and trigger kernel warning. Looks like issue is already fixed upstream by those two commits: commit 1bc3a75fa2223884900136201d74905a0ad01426 Author: Linus Walleij <triad.se> Date: Wed Nov 6 04:29:40 2013 +0100 delete unused clear_halt()code commit 423e1fe71a1bec35c9d11289185aa4b06454cdb0 Author: Marcus Meissner <marcus.de> Date: Mon Apr 29 00:00:48 2013 +0200 PATCH: avoid unconditional clear_halt So most likely we just have to update to latest upstream to fix the bug. Thought there are some more calls to usb_clear_halt(), except removed by above commits, but they first check if endpoint actually stall, so they should be fine.
I'm still getting this issue with Fedora 20 updated. This problem in libmtp was already solved? Do you need more data? Thanks since now!
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 19 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-01-06. Fedora 19 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
