Description of problem:
I am trying to run ejabberd with PAM authentication, but SELinux shoots down PAM-related machinery
during client authentication.

I have the following in my /etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.conf:

SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/unix_chkpwd from 'getattr' accesses on the file /etc/shadow.

If you believe that unix_chkpwd should be allowed getattr access on the shadow file by default.
Then you should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Do
allow this access for now by executing:
# grep unix_chkpwd /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
# semodule -i mypol.pp
