Description C Sand 2010-02-26 07:07:34 UTC
Description of problem:

There appears to be a mis-communication between developers of PPP and NetworkManager, which eventually caused Fedora users to lose network connectivity.

To be specific, a recent update of ppp (to version 2.4.5) in F12 caused breakage with NetworkManager. The problem is that NetworkManager only supported ppp 2.4.4. When the update to PPP was made available to everyone, there was/is no corresponding NetworkManager update. End result is that people who only have access to the internet through 3G mobile no longer have network access and cannot download a fix.

While this version mismatch problem will be eventually resolved, the real problem appears to be a lack of procedure to ensure that version mismatches do not happen again.

Expected results:
Updates don't break core functionality.

As mentioned in

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=548520#c32

update fixes issue. Let me know if updating NM* fixes your issue - mainly guys in CC.

I'll contact NM maintainer to ensure avoiding this issue in the future.

Many thanks (and to Dan Williams as well). ppp-2.4.5-5.fc12.i686 and NetworkManager-0.7.998-2.git20100106.fc12.i686 appear to work all okay on this machine.

Closing.
