Description Alain D D Williams 2012-10-17 10:35:22 UTC
Description of problem:

Using groupmems a user should be able to change who is a member of his primary group. For this it needs to be setuid root.

The man page says ''The groupmems executable should be in mode 2770 as user root and in group groups.''

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

RedHat enterprise 6 - groupmems was not in RHE5.

Either it should be made setuid root (and its SElinux label changed to system_u:object_r:groupadd_exec_t:s0) or the manual page changed to say that it is only for use by root.

Comment 1 Tomas Mraz 2012-10-17 10:42:43 UTC
As this seriously affects system security policies we cannot change the permissions in already released major version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. We could change it in the next major version though.

Of course changing the manpage in RHEL6 is possible.

Comment 4 Alain D D Williams 2012-11-19 17:23:26 UTC
If you do change the man page, please add a comment that it will be fixed (ie made suid root) in RHEL7. Ie accept that you are different from what it should be but not for ever --- try to prevent divergence between the different distros.

People need to be warned if it is likely to change in the future.

Comment 5 Tomas Mraz 2012-11-19 18:48:54 UTC
We still did not decide whether we want the groupmems to be setuid in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.
