Screenshot showing Gnome software on right, dnf update output on left

Description of problem:

Gnome software update says "Software is up to date" no matter how often I hit refresh, but 'dnf update' shows 395 updates to install.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Fedora 23 beta release, fresh install

How reproducible:

Always on this install, at least until I manually update via dnf.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 23 beta
2. Open Gnome software center, pick 'Upload' tab, and hit the refresh button
3. Wait for hours until flaky wifi times out, halting one of Software's package downloads
4. Reboot with proprietary wifi drivers that are more reliable and try again

Actual results:

Gnome software center update tab keeps saying 'Software is up to date', 'Last checked 10:10'

Expected results:

Gnome software center should install some of those 395 updates dnf keeps telling me about.

Can you get me the log of:

killall gnome-software
gnome-software --verbose

Please wait for the app to start, switch to the updates panel, click refresh and then attach the entire log to this bug. Thanks.

Comment 2 Brion Vibber 2015-10-02 22:09:49 UTC
Unfortunately this installation has since been updated manually... I'm trying to replicate the conditions in a VM but haven't been able to yet. Will retest on a physical machine with the flaky wifi adapter I was using before later this weekend...

Comment 3 Sylvain Petreolle 2015-10-21 21:41:51 UTC
I'm having that problem too.
I'll upload the log for the next updates.

Comment 4 Sylvain Petreolle 2015-11-23 22:35:32 UTC
Here is the log you asked for.
I'm also attaching dnf output.

Move this to rawhide as there are many duplicate bugs across F22, F23, F24, rawhide.

Comment 12 Benjamin Xiao 2016-05-31 17:50:16 UTC
I get the same issue. Updates don't show up in Gnome Software until I click the refresh button 1-2 days later. To get around this, I have to do a "pkcon refresh force" and then click the refresh button in Gnome Software **twice** before updates appear. Cache time issue?

Also sidenote, I have a machine I've left running for a while now and Gnome Software said it last checked for updates a week ago and shows no updates. What is the update interval on Gnome Software?

Comment 13 Sylvain Petreolle 2016-07-09 10:19:45 UTC
This problem is still appearing today.
Do you need additional logs ?
Were there any progress ?

Comment 14 Jan Kurik 2016-07-26 04:58:53 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 25 development cycle.
Changing version to '25'.

Comment 15 Duncan Innes 2017-01-24 14:22:18 UTC
Is there any update on this? Shouldn't these update methods use the same package database? Or at least keep in sync so that when one refreshes, the other will also.

Comment 16 Fedora End Of Life 2017-11-16 18:58:34 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 25 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 25. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '25'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 25 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 17 Gergely Gombos 2017-11-21 21:04:16 UTC
I'm upping this bug. This bug is still in F27, at least for me. Updates are working through both dnf and pkcon, but gnome-software cannot get the list of updates. Will try to get a log here ASAP. (Just updated manually so I'll need to wait a day or two.)

Comment 18 Benjamin Xiao 2017-11-21 21:16:19 UTC
The metadata cache seems to be at fault here.

Wouldn't a quick solution be to make the Refresh Updates button in Gnome Software run the equivalent of 'pkcon refresh force' instead?

The current implementation of Refresh just seems to display and download packages for the updates PackageKit already knows about. This, IMHO, should already just appear in Gnome Software when it launches to begin with. The refresh button should cause a PackageKit to force a refresh of its cache.

Comment 19 Fedora End Of Life 2017-12-12 11:12:45 UTC
Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
