Description Paul W. Frields 2010-03-15 02:46:16 UTC
rpmlint generates I: level messages when an en_US dictionary is not found; the hunspell-en package provides this. FYI this package is normally brought in by openoffice.org-core.

Comment 1 Ville Skyttä 2010-03-15 18:19:00 UTC
rpmlint uses python-enchant for spell checking, which in turn uses enchant, and what dictionaries enchant uses is something that depends on enchant's configuration and defaults. Therefore I don't think it would be appropriate to add a hunspell-en dependency to rpmlint. I improved the info message upstream though: http://rpmlint.zarb.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/changeset/1743

I suppose English spell checking with Enchant should work with aspell-en instead of hunspell-en installed, but it doesn't seem to work at least in rpmlint. Enchant bug?

Enchant and hunspell maintainers, do you think it would be appropriate to add a dependency to hunspell-en in one of those packages? It's of course not strictly a requirement if one does not spell check English text but would solve problems like this and the dependency would seem quite innocent to me. (Reassigning to enchant.)

Same problem with claws mail (bug #615007).

Comment 3 Bug Zapper 2010-11-03 19:41:48 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Adding a hunspell-en requires to hunspell gives an ugly circular build dependency.

Comment 7 Rex Dieter 2012-07-25 00:52:44 UTC
and, for what it's worth, yum-langpacks should pull the appropriate dictionary for your locale now.

Are you sure hunspell-en actually requires hunspell to build? The only thing I see it referred to in is scowl/speller/make-hunspell-dict but even there the call to hunspell is commented out and $HUNSPELL isn't used anywhere. I tested dropping the build dep and it builds just fine.

Comment 9 Caolan McNamara 2012-08-01 08:06:06 UTC
yeah, that seems to be the case alright

Comment 10 Caolan McNamara 2012-08-01 08:37:07 UTC
meh, this makes me feel icky
