Description of problem: I keep nice human readable labels on my disk partitions to make it simpler to know which is which in circumstances like custom partitioning when installing fedora 13 alpha x86_64 from the dvd image. When I get to the custom layout screen with the table listing all the partitions on all my disks, it would be simpler to recognize partitions in the table if the current label were included in the table along with the /dev/sdb2 names. I can see the label when I select a partition and say Edit, but it would be convenient to see them displayed in the initial table so I don't have to hunt & peck with Edit and Cancel. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Whatever was on the dvd. How reproducible: I'd assume every time. Steps to Reproduce: 1. see above 2. 3. Actual results: Hung & peck to find disk labels. Expected results: Labels right there on the display of all partitions. Additional info: Actually, it would be convenient to be able to set the label when I'm reformatting a partition as well, instead of having to manually do that later with e2label.
Is the first image at http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f12/en-US/html/s1-diskpartitioning-x86.html the screen you're referring to?
Right. Another column in that table with "Label" would be handy.

As the screen shot in bug 627389 comment 6 shows, the label is still not included in fedora 14 alpha :-).
And, just to keep this up to date, the label isn't in fedora 15 beta partitioner either (even though anaconda now expands to fill my 1920x1080 screen, so there is plenty of leftover space for it :-).
This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '13'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
The labels still didn't show up in the fedora 15 final.
The problem persists in rawhide for Fedora 17 (May 2012, which is 7 months into the future.) I'll attempt to adjust Version of this bugzilla report, but because I'm not the originator nor a maintainer, then bugzilla might not let me. So please, Tom Horsley, follow up to change the Version. Rescue Mode does it much better. The "System to Rescue" dialog has the label and the system identification (Fedora 15, Centos 5.6, etc.) Even this could be improved by adding "32-bit" or "64-bit" tags. In the graphical installer's "Please Select a Device" full-screen page for "Create Custom Layout", then the data columns occupy only the left 380 pixels. The entire right half (minimum 800x600 VGA display) to two-thirds (1280x1024 terminal) is blank, and easily could contain columns for Label and PartUUID (/dev/disk/by-label and /dev/disk/by-partuuid, respectively). Similarly, after clicking the Edit button then the "Edit Partition: /dev/xxx" dialog could contain the existing label, existing system identification, existing UUID. And there should be a field for the user to enter "New label", to be propagated to the mkfs. The frustrated user can get the data by going back and forth to the shell on VT2 (Ctrl-Alt-F2, Ctrl-Alt-F6) and using command-line utilities, but Graphical Install should make it easy.
OK, I updated the version to 16 (I have noticed the problem persists in the fedora 16 DVD versions I've used). Frustrated users don't actually have to go back and forth to a terminal, you can just select a partition and click on "Edit" which will show you the label (that's what I do to track down the partitions I'm looking for).

Frustrated users don't actually have to > go back and forth to a terminal, you can just select a partition and > click on "Edit" which will show you the label (that's what I do to track down > the partitions I'm looking for). Rawhide for Fedora 17 has no [old] Label field in the dialog for Edit partition. [Things have gotten worse.] Using VT2 is required for now.
Yikes! Can we mark bugs as blockers for fedora 17 yet? :-).
The best thing to do is to talk about this on anaconda-devel-list, as we are actively in the process of redesigning the storage UI. If you talk about it there, it'll catch the attention of designers and we can talk about how best to work the information into the new dialogs.
I just installed f17 alpha last night and the labels still don't show up in the custom layout screen, but I do see the old label in the Edit dialog so perhaps comment #10 has been fixed anyway. I might as well change this bug to fedora 17 while I'm at it.
Labels are now fairly prominently displayed on the right hand side of custom partitioning both for existing filesystems, as well as providing you a place to edit for new filesystems. Given the completely different nature of the new UI, though, if you are still not happy with label display, please open a new bug and we'll take a look. Thanks.
