Thanks for a bug report. Did ABRT catch the e-addressbook-factory crash? If yes, please give me a bug number for it, if not, please install debug info packages for evolution-data-server and evolution-exchange, and then run e-addressbook-factory under gdb, like here: $ gdb /usr/libexec/e-addressbook-factory --ex r and then run evolution (note there shouldn't be running other factory before invoking the above command). When you go to Contacts in Evolution, and choose the exchange addressbook, then the gdb should show the prompt. Please run there a gdb command: (gdb) t a a bt and paste here result of it, together with the output before the gdb prompt showed (Can be everything under "Server is up and running..." line, if it'll not be too long). Please make sure you'll not post here any private information, like server names or passwords, if they will be shown in the output. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the update. No no, it's OK, the above is shown the issue.
*** Bug 597247 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Not sure if it's the same issue but when I try to display the GAL also on Fedora 13, it gives me the following message & the contacts list is empty. "The Evolution address book has quit unexpectedly. Your contacts for file:///home/jkissane/.evolution/addressbook/local/system will not be available until Evolution is restarted." Never saw this issue on Fedora 12 where the GAL was available.
Not only does evolution not find the exchange address books, it also is unable to find the calendar. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): evolution-2.30.1-8.fc13.i686
I also updated my workstation. The procedure I used there was slightly different. On my Laptop I made a backup of evolution and after updateing and makeing a completely new home dir I restored from that file using the evolution setup assistent. On my workstation I left the home dir alone but deleted evolution and gconf and gnome stuff, and there it works. Versions are the same and both machine are x86_64. I used the setup assistent to setup evolution from scratch and it works I also tried to completely remove evolution from my laptop. (removing .evolution, and all entries in gconf while logged out) Issue remains. I can not access the address book.
What is the recommended way of removing evolution completely?
I tried one more time. I looged out and in as root. Removed .gconf/apps/evolution and .evolution. Killed all gconf realted tasks and logged back in. I recreated my exchange account using the evolution assistent (this comes up twice for some reason) but did not add the GAL server. Wait until evolution settles and lokk at the adressbook and there it is all my contacts are there. There was no password dialog when I accessed the addressbook. I add the GAL server, the adressbook disappears and evolution requests a restart. Done both work now. But I am asked for a password. The bug could be set to works for me, but I think something is wrong here. Maybe it is related to the GAL server. As far as I recall I normally set this up during the initial setup, not like now. Gregor If I get no comments I will switch to works for me tomorrow.

Tried the above procedure, if I have no GAL address entered then I can view my Contacts without problems but as soon as I put in the GAL & restart Evolution, clicking on Contacts or the GAL brings the pop-up "The Evolution address book has quit unexpectedly" A small improvement I guess in that I can see my Contacts but the GAL is still AWOL!
Is your e-addressbook-factory also crashing with > /usr/lib64/evolution-data-server-1.2/extensions/libebookbackendexchange.so: > undefined symbol: ldap_ntlm_bind , please? If so, then there is some linking issue with evolution-exchange.
Ok so these are the messages I see if I run Evolution from the shell *after* adding in the GAL server, I waited for it settle and complete all new mail checks & then clicked on the Contacts which is when the warnings about the "e-d-s proxy died" start to appear. ==================================== lnx0023ae8c33b6 (42) evolution (evolution:17580): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loading categories from "/home/jkissane/.evolution/categories.xml" (evolution:17580): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loaded 31 categories error : unterminated entity reference S error : unterminated entity reference S (evolution:17580): e-data-server-ui-WARNING **: Unable to find password(s) in keyring (Keyring reports: No matching results) (evolution:17580): camel-exchange-provider-WARNING **: got_new_smtp_messages: 7 lnx0023ae8c33b6 (43) evolution (evolution:17653): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loading categories from "/home/jkissane/.evolution/categories.xml" (evolution:17653): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loaded 31 categories e-data-server-ui-Message: Unable to find password(s) in keyring (Keyring reports: No matching results) e-data-server-ui-Message: Key file does not have group 'Passwords-Exchange' error : unterminated entity reference S error : unterminated entity reference S (evolution:17653): camel-exchange-provider-WARNING **: got_new_smtp_messages: 7 (evolution:17653): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:106: e-d-s proxy died (evolution:17653): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:106: e-d-s proxy died (evolution:17653): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:106: e-d-s proxy died (evolution:17653): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:106: e-d-s proxy died
I meant e-addressbook-factory, not evolution itself, as e-addressbook-factory is a process which is crashing. You can find it in /usr/libexec or similar directory. Note only one can run in a system in one time, because it's a dbus service.
I don't see that process running (although it is in /usr/libexec). The only one I noticed is e-calendar-factory. Evolution was recently bumped up a version to 2.30.1-8 but hasn't helped with accessing the GAL. My current situation is that if I leave the 'Global Catalog Server' field blank then I can access my Contacts & Calendar from Exchange. If I don't leave it blank then the Contacts stops working but neither can I access the GAL.
(In reply to comment #15) > My current situation is that if I leave the 'Global Catalog Server' field blank > then I can access my Contacts & Calendar from Exchange. If I don't leave it > blank then the Contacts stops working but neither can I access the GAL. Leaving it blank should only influence whether you want Evolution-exchange to detect where is your GAL automatically, or whether you provide its server name on your own. The only influence on contacts might been whether the e-addressbook-factory crashes or not, which is strange when it crashes only with GAL configured, but not when it is not configured (for some setups leaving GAL field empty means not using it - autodetection probably fails).
Is there any further debugging I can do to try and help track down what's going wrong? Strangely the 'e-addressbook-factory' process is running today after I started Evolution but it definitely wasn't last week. In case it helps, this is the pop-up I get when I click the GAL button in Contacts: "Unable to open address book This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI was entered, or the server is unreachable. Detailed error message: Other error" As mentioned, Contacts & Calendar work as expected.
You can try to run e-addressbook-factory on its own console (terminal) and watch it for a reason better than "other error" shown in the UI. You can do that for example by this: a) close evolution b) evolution --force-shutdown c) if left running, then close e-addressbook-factory process d) on one console run $ /usr/libexec/e-addressbook-factory and when it prints "Server is up and running..." you can e) run evolution on another console f) select the exchange address book or GAL, and see whether anything new is shown on the factory console
Output is below from both. e-addressbook-factory window ---------------------------- Server is up and running... error : unterminated entity reference S Evolution window ---------------- error : unterminated entity reference S (evolution:11258): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2576: unmatched error name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.addressbook.Book.EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE (evolution:11258): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2576: unmatched error name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.addressbook.Book.EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE (evolution:11258): e-utils-WARNING **: Something called e_alert_dialog_constructed() with a NULL parent window. evolution-exchange-2.30.1-4.fc13 has been submitted as an update for Fedora 13. http://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/evolution-exchange-2.30.1-4.fc13
I created a test package, which should fix the initial issue with > /usr/libexec/e-addressbook-factory: symbol lookup error: > /usr/lib64/evolution-data-server-1.2/extensions/libebookbackendexchange.so: > undefined symbol: ldap_ntlm_bind Could you give it a try, please? (see comment #20 for package URL.) Thanks in advance.

evolution-exchange-2.30.1-4.fc13 has been pushed to the Fedora 13 testing repository. If problems still persist, please make note of it in this bug report. If you want to test the update, you can install it with su -c 'yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update evolution-exchange'. You can provide feedback for this update here: http://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/evolution-exchange-2.30.1-4.fc13
Seems to work for me at least on one of my machines. But as I wrote before on that machine it also worked before the update. Will look deeper into the other one later.
I just tested the update and now I get similar errors as John Kissane in comment #22. When I configure my GAL in the Exchange account and restart evolution I get the following error window: "Unable to open address book This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI was entered, or the server is unreachable. Detailed error message: Other error" And this is the output from evolution in the terminal: [nalwalovaton@localhost ~]$ evolution (evolution:2416): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loading categories from "/home/nalwalovaton/.evolution/categories.xml" (evolution:2416): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loaded 29 categories ** (evolution:2416): CRITICAL **: categories_icon_theme_hack: assertion `filename != NULL && *filename != '\0'' failed ** (evolution:2416): DEBUG: Loading Exchange MAPI Plugin ** (evolution:2416): DEBUG: MAPI listener is constructed with 1 listed MAPI accounts (evolution:2416): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2576: unmatched error name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.addressbook.Book.EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE (evolution:2416): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2576: unmatched error name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.addressbook.Book.EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE (evolution:2416): e-utils-WARNING **: Something called e_alert_dialog_constructed() with a NULL parent window. This is no longer legal, please fix it. I'm still unable to search contacts in the GAL so I have to keep using my workaround of using exchange-mapi just for the contacts and evolution-exchange for the mailing and the calendars. If you need me to do any other test, please tell me.

This happens when I go to the Contacts module and click on the Gloabal Address List in the Exchange account, not as soon as I start evolution.
I installed the latest RPMs from the updates-testing repo and now it works fine. $ rpm -qa | grep "^evolution" evolution-help-2.30.1-8.fc13.noarch evolution-exchange-2.30.1-4.fc13.i686 evolution-2.30.1-8.fc13.i686 evolution-data-server-2.30.1-3.fc13.i686 $ uname -a Linux kefalos 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Jun 11 09:42:24 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Best regards, Peter

(In reply to comment #28) > ...EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE It thinks you are offline. Could you close/kill all evolution-related processes (evolution --force-shutdown + e-calendar-factory & e-addressbook-factory) and then run evolution as $ evolution --online I guess the evolution-exchange module incorrectly thinks you are offline and doesn't even try to connect to the server (note there is a fix done upstream to understand this error name above, which will be part of 2.30.2 release on Monday). Didn't work either although messages from e-addressbook-server were different: Evolution ========= lnx0023ae8c33b6 (41) evolution --online (evolution:12728): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loading categories from "/home/jkissane/.evolution/categories.xml" (evolution:12728): e-data-server-DEBUG: Loaded 31 categories error : unterminated entity reference S error : unterminated entity reference S (evolution:12728): camel-exchange-provider-WARNING **: got_new_smtp_messages: 7 (evolution:12728): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strchug: assertion `string != NULL' failed (evolution:12728): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strchomp: assertion `string != NULL' failed (evolution:12728): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strchug: assertion `string != NULL' failed (evolution:12728): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strchomp: assertion `string != NULL' failed (evolution:12728): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2576: unmatched error name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.addressbook.Book.EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE (evolution:12728): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2576: unmatched error name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.addressbook.Book.EDATABOOKSTATUSREPOSITORYOFFLINE (evolution:12728): e-utils-WARNING **: Something called e_alert_dialog_constructed() with a NULL parent window. Sorry forgot your last question, yes I'm using NetworkManager. lnx0023ae8c33b6 (42) rpm -q -a | grep -i networkmanager NetworkManager-pptp-0.8.0-1.git20100411.fc13.x86_64 NetworkManager-gnome-0.8.1-0.1.git20100510.fc13.x86_64 knetworkmanager-libs-0.9-0.19.20100419.fc13.x86_64 NetworkManager-openconnect-0.8.0-1.git20100411.fc13.x86_64 knetworkmanager-0.9-0.19.20100419.fc13.x86_64 NetworkManager-glib-0.8.1-0.1.git20100510.fc13.x86_64 NetworkManager-vpnc-0.8.0-1.git20100411.fc13.x86_64 NetworkManager-0.8.1-0.1.git20100510.fc13.x86_64 NetworkManager-openvpn-0.7.997-1.fc13.x86_64
(In reply to comment #30) > (e-addressbook-factory:12727): evolution-exchange-storage-CRITICAL **: > exchange_share_config_listener_get_account_for_uri: assertion `uri != NULL' > failed This is the cause, I believe. It had been fixed upstream at [1] and is part of the 2.30.2 Monday release of evolution-exchange. [1] https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=616913
Thanks, will revisit next week once I pick up the new release of evolution-exchange.
Will have to wait for this bug to be sorted out before I can try the new version it looks like: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=608212
It looks like there is some mess-up with the newly released evolution update... Yes, it unfortunately is. Please do not steal a bug report, there is one for it already, see bug #608212
The new release of evolution-exchange which I was able to install today fixes the issue for me. Thanks!
I just installed the latest update available and now the address book works fine for me, thanks. I think it's safe to close this bug.
Thanks for an update. I'm closing this per above comments.
