Description Roman Polach 2011-05-24 23:59:56 UTC
Description of problem:
GnomeShell uses falback mode (both in Live desktop CD session and
on installed system) even with Radeon HD 4350 (Rv710), which
supports accelerated graphics (even compiz) for long time now...

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fresh Fedora 15 installation

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
Start Live desktop CD session or system on installed system

Actual results:
It starts in GnomeShell's fallback mode

Expected results:
It should start in full GnomeShell environment

Additional info:
  glxinfo | grep "renderer string"
    gives output:
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe

Note:
It might be a dupe of https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=704795

Comment 1 Roman Polach 2011-05-26 09:47:41 UTC
Is there known any workaround to Get Radeon HD 4350 play with Gnome Shell?
Even possibility of updating parts of graphics stack from upstream?

Comment 2 Jérôme Glisse 2011-05-26 17:09:38 UTC
Please attach dmesg & Xorg log

Comment 5 Dave Airlie 2011-06-01 04:38:36 UTC
remove nomodeset from your kernel command line and rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Comment 6 Roman Polach 2011-06-01 19:58:31 UTC
It hangs all the time when I remove nomodeset and/or delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

1) with nomodeset & xorg.conf exists:
it boots with text progressbar and gnome shell starts in fallback mode
2) without nomodeset & xorg.conf exists:
it boots with graphical progressbar, then switched to console and hangs
3) with nomodeset & xorg.conf have been deleted:
it boots with text progressbar and hangs when clear blue screen with strips
   and birds is displayed
4) without nomodeset & xorg.conf have been deleted:
it boots with graphical progressbar and hangs when clear blue screen with strips
   and birds is displayed

In all cases but (1) it hangs before login screen can be displayed.

Similar problem, but with Live CD, I described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=707410

Could you still get to the console (via Ctrl-Alt-F2) and collect /var/log/Xorg.0.log and dmesg output in this scenario, please?

Thank you

Comment 9 Roman Polach 2011-06-02 20:52:33 UTC
Yes, Ctrl-Alt-F2 works. Attaching logs...

lshw output

Here is output of lshw. Is it sufficient?

Comment 16 Roman Polach 2011-08-31 12:55:18 UTC
Can be workarounded by learning LLVMpipe GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap as wroted on http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTg1NA ?
Of course, the real issue is why llvmpipe is used and not r600g...(?)

Comment 17 Roman Polach 2011-11-08 23:18:16 UTC
Please any hints to get Gnome work on Fedora with Radeon4350?

Comment 18 Roman Polach 2011-11-28 19:28:28 UTC
Maybe interesting information:
Booting Mint 12 Gnome3 live session
gives me full working Gnome Shell environment
and even accelerated GL...

Comment 19 Roman Polach 2011-11-28 19:30:18 UTC
Can I somehow help solving this problem?

Comment 20 Roman Polach 2012-01-17 11:32:47 UTC
Could be possible to analyze differences
in graphics infrastructure of Mint 12
(which works with Rv710 even accelerated)
and Fedora to get this work with Fedora 17?

Comment 21 Roman Polach 2012-01-26 00:22:22 UTC
This bug is fixed in F16. I did not see it,
because of I thought F16 liveCD freezes - see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754520
