Description of problem: The first install of Fedora 17 went well, with all the standard install options. On the second install, I tried removing the logical volume for /home and changed it to /usr, as I already have a separate /home drive. Installation installed packages fine. When I went to boot, it could not find init and dropped me to the debugging shell. I checked the newly installed mounted filesystem (i believe it was under /mnt/sysimage)... and looked in the /boot directory, and there was nothing there. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 17 Install How reproducible: Tried 2 more times, 1 with the same options, and the other removing the /home logical volume all together. Same results. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install, removing /home logical volume 2. 3. Actual results: Cannot find init, dropped to debug shell, nothing in /boot Expected results: boot Additional info: none.

Thanks Steve - I wasn't on a virtual machine, so I didn't get to see all the details/screenshot. That is the error message "Cannot find init!..."
It turns out the problem was the fact I put / and /usr on different partitions and the /usr partition was not being mounted, which cause /usr/sbin/init not to found. So adding 'rd.lvm.lv=vg_f16/lv_usr' to the linux line in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg fixed the problem

Wouldn't the proper fix here be to put init back in /sbin where it has been for 20 years or so? Did it not occur to anyone that tons of people mount /usr as a separate partition?
The fix for this bug generated Bug #815264. Doesn't this defeat the whole point of the /usr move feature? Gene
Michael Glasgow's comment is pertinant. Is Lenhart and the rest of the /usr move team aware of this fix? Gene
