Description Thomas Pemberton 2009-06-11 16:27:08 UTC
Description of problem:
   When linking the newest flash-plugin with firefox, firefox crashes on startup. The same firefox version and flash-plugin works on my Fedora 10 machine but on this Fedora 11 one it crashes.

Firefox versions:
   firefox-3.0.0.10
   firefox-3.5b4

How reproducible:
   Everytime the flash-plugin is linked

Steps to Reproduce:
   Sometimes starting firefox makes it crash, others going to gmail or any other website makes it crash

Comment 1 Thomas Pemberton 2009-06-11 16:30:35 UTC
Flash-plugin version:
  flash-plugin-10.0.22.87

Comment 2 Matěj Cepl 2009-06-11 23:30:26 UTC
Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

First of all, could we get output of the command

	rpm -qa *xulrun* *firefox* *mozilla* *flash* *plugin*

Are we talking 64bit or 32bit distribution and firefox? If you have nspluginwrapper installed, could we get an output of the command
mozilla-plugin-config -l (otherwise the version of flash-plugin could be found in about:plugins tab).

Please also install firefox-debuginfo (debuginfo-install is from
yum-utils package).

	debuginfo-install firefox

Then run firefox with a parameter -g. That will start firefox running inside of gdb debugger. Then use command run and do whatever you did to make firefox crash. When it happens, you should go back to the gdb and run

	(gdb) thread apply all backtrace

This produces usually many screens of the text. Copy all of them into a text editor and attach the file to the bug as an uncompressed attachment.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

I am running F11 64 bit and I installed FF 3.5 i585 version to use flash player 32 bit as Flash 64 bit has problems with the song player on the site www.imeem.com .

So when I installed FF 3.5 32bit and fired it up, it would crash on flash plugin. Then I installed nspluginwrapper.i586 and it pulled 3 more dependences with it.

Installed:
  nspluginwrapper.i586 0:1.3.0-5.fc11

Dependency Installed:
libcurl.i586 0:7.19.4-8.fc11            libidn.i586 0:1.9-4                 libssh2.i586 0:1.0-2.fc11

Then I removed nspluginwrapper.i586 and now flash still works in 32 bit FF.

SO the 3 dependencies did the trick .

I hope this info helps.

I am afraid this is not a good backtrace. I will probably have to ask you to follow the advice of gdb and use (that's all on one line):

GDB backtrace of Firefox bug

Backtrace report after installing all debuginfo packages gdb said needed installed. Top thread is /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so which is linked in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugin

Comment 7 Callum Benepe 2009-06-24 14:52:08 UTC
This isn't a fix, but a workaround. I downloaded SeaMonkey. Works just fine with flash-plugin and java. I'll try repair suggestions and try and find the bug, but use SeaMonkey in the meantime...thanks!

Comment 8 Diaa Kasem 2009-06-25 14:15:26 UTC
I actually stopped using flash .. But stopped using Firefox too .. I'm using Flock right now ...

I dunno .. but When I add some addons to firefox it starts to freez then I must reboot the PC to be able to use it ...

One time I started adding addons one by one and wrote down what affected me ... every time they were working fine .. but @ the end they all crashed ...

What I did when I find an addon that results into a freez, I remove the .mozilla directory and start over adding the addons again..

here is the list I was using .. ( not all of them .. ) after the end of this list .. I stopped ..coz the combination of these addons even installing them one by one .. at this point CRASHS ( not freezes ) The firefox ...

I'm using Fedora 11 .. on Dell Vostro 1000 Laptop ...

Kernel : 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.x86_64

Why not to leave that nspluginwrapper.i586 there and run it from 64bit firefox? Notice, that we intentionally don't have firefox.32bit in x86_64 repos.

Well, sorry, but

Thread 1 (Thread 0xb7fd2760 (LWP 4307)):
#0  0x00000000 in ?? ()
#1  0xabfbee16 in ?? () from /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so

is clearly bug in libflashplayer.so (call to 0x000000 just cannot end well). We cannot do much about it, and so I have to close this as CANTFIX.

... to finish a thought (which I didn't do before) ... one of other advantages of nspluginwrapper (aside from the fact that you wouldn't have to run 32bit firefox and have whole 32bit set of libraries) is that when flash-plugin crashes (which just happens) it wouldn't take down firefox with itself. You just reload that one particular page and you can continue.

Comment 12 bhclaccount 2009-06-27 05:26:36 UTC
It's crashing for me as well and I'm on 32bit. This can't just be flash's so problem as the plugin works perfectly in firefox on openSUSE.

Comment 13 wacheo 2009-06-29 10:13:34 UTC
I had this problem with FC11 + vanilla Firefox as well. The "solution" was to remove libfreebl3.chk and libfreebl3.so from the Firefox directory.

Comment 14 Edward Rudd 2009-06-29 14:41:48 UTC
moving freebl3 out of the way DOES fix the crashing, however no sound is available as it fails to connect to PulseAudio.

Comment 15 Callum Benepe 2009-06-29 15:53:13 UTC
I just removed both of those files, and Firefox is working fine.
Ran a video on Youtube, and it does have sound...thanks!
I should add that I'm running a copy of Firefox in a local folder, not the Fedora /usr/lib/firefox copy. Don't know if that would make a difference.
I searched for libfreebl3 rpm online and found reference to network security services

http://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=libfreebl3.so

I wonder if removing this file would expose any type of vulnerability?

<<<remove libfreebl3.chk and libfreebl3.so from the Firefox directory...>>>

I meant to add, that running Firefox in a terminal shell, the foloowing message shows regularly.

I don't know if it is related to anything, but if removing libfreebl3.so helps we might be interested.

Comment 18 milamgh 2009-07-01 00:50:10 UTC
FYI, I took the libfreebl3 files out of the firefox directory as suggested and everything seems to be working fine. Flash video plays fine with sound.

I used the exact same downloaded flash-plugin on my laptop when it had Fedora 10 and it worked fine. Now with Fedora 11 it is crashing when it has the flash-plugin. I also was using the exact same version of Firefox on both Fedora 10 and 11. Clearly something has changed with Fedora 11 to make this happen.

Comment 20 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-07-02 12:31:15 UTC
I think we need more debuginfo packages, the stack traces still have a lot of missing symbols.

This might help:
  debuginfo-install xulrunner firefox nspr nss

Comment 21 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-07-03 22:21:35 UTC
Yes, there was a change between Fedora 10 and Fedora 11 that might be related.

In F11, glibc has started to depend on libfreebl3.so, in order to centralize all operating system use of cryptography.

But at the same time, there was a desire to keep the list of dependencies as small as possible.

Usually, libfreebl3.so depends on libraries from nspr.rpm

Bob Relyea had invented mechanisms to use a dynamic runtime decision, whether libfreebl3.so should use some internal minimal nspr replacements, or whether it should link against the real nspr.

The idea was, if libfreebl3.so gets referenced by glibc, it shall use its internal nspr replacements (stubs), and in other scenarios it should load the real nspr libs.

Comment 22 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-07-03 22:33:44 UTC
The vanilla Firefox (the one downloaded from mozilla.com) contains libfreebl3.so that is built the traditional way, with hard linking to nspr libs.

The Fedora 11 libfreebl3.so is built with the new dynamic runtime decision, whether or not to bind to nspr libs.

I understand that we crash when having a mix of both libfreebl3.so variants visible to a process (when starting the vanilla Firefox, it sees its local copy first, and the systemwide later in the path).

I wonder if the flash plugin (or code loaded through it) references the systemwide libfreebl3.so, while the remainder of firefox references the local libfreebl3.so, and the mix causes confusion?

Or is the flash plugin incompatible with the mechanism used to decide about nspr binding?

Comment 23 Lonni J Friedman 2009-07-09 17:56:43 UTC
Please add me to the list of people afflicted by this bug (on Fedora11-i686). I can confirm that the workaround noted above (deleting libfreebl3.chk and libfreebl3.so) does eliminate the crashes and allow flash to work.

Comment 24 Bob Glickstein 2009-07-10 07:11:48 UTC
I too just updated to Fedora 11 and ran smack into this bug. I downloaded the vanilla Firefox and moved libfreebl3.* out of the way as suggested above, but that didn't help. I then moved all *.so files out of the vanilla firefox directory (except for the few that aren't duplicated elsewhere) and that still didn't help. Firefox runs fine until a Flash object tries to do something.

Any other ideas for a workaround? Any ideas about why the workaround doesn't work for me?

Comment 25 Bob Glickstein 2009-07-11 02:29:29 UTC
I solved my own problem from above: the workaround started working for me after I removed some old RPM called libflashsupport that I had laying around.

Comment 26 Jarmo 2009-07-16 12:42:07 UTC
I had the same problem after upgraded F10 --> F10.
The resolve the problem remove the old package:
yum remove libflashsupport

No need remove/move libfreebl3.* files.

Comment 27 Jarmo 2009-07-16 12:43:52 UTC
Just correct above typo: F10 --> F10 should be F10 --> F11.

Comment 28 Lonni J Friedman 2009-07-16 14:16:51 UTC
I've never had libflashsupport installed, so that 'solution' doesn't apply here.

Comment 29 Tom Wilson 2009-07-17 00:50:27 UTC
I have neither libflashsupport nor libfreebl3 installed, yet I have this problem. I'm running Fedora 11 64 bit and Firefox 3.5, both through a fresh install. Firefox fails frequently, especially when opened via a link from Thunderbird (3.0b2).

Comment 30 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-07-22 21:37:35 UTC
Please give a link to a site with flash that crashes for you.

Please report whether you have installed
Firefox in 32 or 64 bit
and
flash plugin in 32 or 64 bit

Comment 31 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-07-22 21:41:31 UTC
Please also explain what mechanism you used to install flash.

Comment 32 Lonni J Friedman 2009-07-22 21:42:25 UTC
This one does, but really, its any site with flash. This is in i686:

Comment 33 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-07-22 21:48:06 UTC
rpm -Uvh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-1.0-0.noarch.rpm
yum install flash-plugin

Doesn't work on F11 x86_64.
When I try, I get:
http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/linux/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404: Not Found

If I run Firefox 64 bit with flash 32 bit, I get error message on console
(LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so [/usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32])
which makes sense, and no flash content.

On a 32 bit system with Fedora 11, I installed 32 bit flash plugin, and I can watch videos from youtube just fine.

Comment 35 Lonni J Friedman 2009-07-22 21:53:49 UTC
I'm glad that it works for you. Its not working for me (and others) without the hack noted above. What information do you need to debug this further?

Comment 36 Nathan Kohagen 2009-08-05 06:54:21 UTC
Firefox crashes soon after flash content loads. I see pulseaudio errors in my log like those listed in Bug 506075.

Comment 37 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-08-07 04:15:08 UTC
Still no problems on my system.
I have flash-plugin 10.0.32.18
and firefox 3.5.2

Could anyone please confirm that you still see the reported crash with these recent versions?

Comment 38 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-08-07 04:19:32 UTC

Deleting the files (such as libfreebl3.chk) works but everytime firefox updates itself, it replaces all those files and I have to do it again. This problem does not exist for me on openSUSE, only on Fedora 11.

Comment 40 Martin F 2009-08-08 13:08:45 UTC
I had a similar problem with firefox 3.5* 64-bit hanging when running some sites with flash. The only way was to force quit.

I am confirming comment #37 that upgrading to the latest flash-plugin 10.0.32.18 (dated 2009/7/30) fixes the problem. Works perfectly now.

Comment 41 Gerry Reno 2009-08-09 18:36:23 UTC
I have flash-plugin 10.0.32.18 and firefox 3.5.2 and firefox still says "missing plugin" whenever flash is required on a site. When I click on the "missing plugin" icon it goes searching and then says there are no plugins available.

Gerry, this sounds like a different issue. This bug is about "crashes". In your scenario it appears you don't get any flash content at all and there is no crash. Maybe you could ask on forums or search the web to see what you need in order to enable flash on your system?

Thank you.

Anyone still crashing (if yes, please see comment 38 first)?

If nobody is crashing anymore, we should close this.

Comment 42 is obviously correct. Please take a look at the output of mozilla-plugin-config -l and if you won't find your flash plugin there please file a NEW bug and to it output both of this command and of

	rpm -qa \*xulrun\* \*firefox\* \*mozilla\* \*flash\* \*plugin\*

Thanks in advance.

Comment 45 Karl Tomlinson 2009-08-10 20:59:49 UTC
Mozilla crash reports indicate that this is still happening with flash-plugin 10.0.32.18 and firefox 3.5.2 (mozilla.com builds).

http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?product=Firefox&version=Firefox%3A3.5.2&platform=linux&query_search=signature&query_type=exact&query=&date=&range_value=1&range_unit=weeks&do_query=1&signature=%400x0%20|%20libflashplayer.so%400x1c7f6c

About getting package versions, the information is kind of there in the reports, but a bit tricky to match up. The "Debug Identifier" in the "Modules" page of each report is an md5sum of the text section of the shared object file.

Comment 46 wacheo 2009-08-11 05:26:57 UTC

What I did to "fix" my problems:

Removed firefox and flash-plugin, did rm -Rf /usr/lib/flash-plugin /usr/lib/mozilla/ and installed them again.

After that I got some assert failures with nspluginwrapper so removed that.

After that I got flash working without sound.

Noticed some old: libflashsupport-000-0.5.svn20070904.i386

Removed that. And not flash works and sound works (but then I've hit with that #506075 but that's a new problem then)..

This machine has gone many ugprades, latest was dvd upgrade from 9->10 and then preupgrade from 10 to 11.

Question to everyone who experiences this bug:

When you crash, are you using
(a) a Firefox that was installed as a Fedora rpm package
or
(b) a Firefox that you have downloaded directly from mozilla.org

I confirm this bug when doing (b), see also
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=497251

I never saw a crash when doing (a).
If you crash with (a), then please add a comment.

Comment 52 Vassilios Kotoulas 2009-08-22 16:52:00 UTC
I installed nspluginwrapper-1.3.0-6.fc11.i586 and now only flashplayer crashes but not the whole browser

Since firefox-3.5.2-2 I have had problems. Interestingly Seamonkey works fine, for java, flash, js etc.

$ rpm -qa | grep -i firefox
firefox-3.5.2-2.fc11.x86_64

$ firefox

Comment 54 Wan-Teh Chang 2009-08-24 18:49:38 UTC
This crash also affects the Chromium browser (now a 32-bit
ia32 application) when it is installed on a 64-bit x64 Fedora
11 system because it installs 32-bit NSS libraries. See
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=20001

Since Chromium has just been ported to 64-bit x64, Chromium
will work around this bug by releasing 64-bit builds so that
it doesn't need to ship (32-bit) NSS libraries. This workaround
is an option for Chromium because it treats NSS as a system
library. We still need to fix this bug for Firefox.

I filed Bug 501864 for a similar issue on 2009-05-21 03 but it was closed as CANTFIX, maybe it is related?

Has anyone tried switching to/from full screen playing flash video?

Comment 56 Mark Harig 2009-08-27 03:47:53 UTC
I am finding that what crashes the web browser / flash player depends on the content. Here are some commands that started web browsers (not only firefox) and played the sound and video without a problem:

$ /usr/bin/seamonkey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32wIKaLkvc4&NR=1

$ /usr/bin/firefox http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32wIKaLkvc4&NR=1

$ /usr/bin/galeon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32wIKaLkvc4&NR=1
(Numerous errors are displayed, but they do not prevent 'galeon' from playing the video.)

$ /usr/bin/epiphany http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32wIKaLkvc4&NR=1

$ rpm -q seamonkey firefox galeon epiphany
seamonkey-1.1.17-1.fc11.x86_64
firefox-3.5.2-2.fc11.x86_64
galeon-2.0.7-13.fc11.x86_64
epiphany-2.26.3-3.fc11.x86_64

The 64-bit flash player library was extracted from
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

The following URL causes all four web browsers to crash:

$ /usr/bin/seamonkey http://www.youtube.com/falltvpreview
Illegal instruction
$ echo $?
132

$ /usr/bin/firefox http://www.youtube.com/falltvpreview
/usr/lib64/firefox-3.5.2/run-mozilla.sh: line 131:  6660 Illegal instruction     "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
$ echo $?

$ /usr/bin/firefox http://www.youtube.com/falltvpreview
(numerous messages ending with)

$ echo $?

$ /usr/bin/epiphany http://www.youtube.com/falltvpreview

when my flashplayer crashes, I get the following message in syslog:
Aug 27 20:38:54 kra kernel: npviewer.bin[3031]: segfault at 0 ip 00b159fb sp bff20c40 error 4 in ld-2.10.1.so[b0b000+20000]

Comment 58 Tore H. Larsen 2009-09-02 16:44:09 UTC
Downgraded firefox and xulrunner. Same problem.

Then removed xine-plugin. Fixed the problem for me. No more crashes, and flash works fine again.

When possible, could you provide the URL of the flash content that you are playing? The URL can be provided to firefox at the command line (the final argument).

I have never had xulrunner installed, but firefox still does not play some content. Recent upgrades to some packages have stopped the crashing for me, but the crashes have been replaced by assertion failures. I will include a list of these assertion failures as an attachment, along with the command that lead to the failures.

$ rpm -q xulrunner xine xine-plugin firefox
xulrunner-1.9.1.2-1.fc11.x86_64
package xine is not installed
package xine-plugin is not installed

$ /etc/system-release

Thanks. I attempted to play that flash content but could not. Firefox does not crash, but the flash player does not play -- the "screen" area of the player is blank.

Are you able to play this youtube content?

Here is what I have installed:

Can you tell me what repository provided you with a 64-bit flash-plugin RPM? I did not find that RPM here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
There is a 32-bit 10.0.32.18 RPM provided by Adobe, however.

I am also using the 64-bit version 10.0.32.18 flashplayer/library that Adobe provides at the URL, above.

Would you please attempt the following?

It's interesting that this 'libflashplayer.so' is different from the 'libflashplayer.so' listed above.

Can you tell me what 'about:plugins' reports when entered in the address bar in firefox?

>
> # rpm -qf /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so

Can you tell me where you got a 64-bit version of 10.0.32.18 for the flash-plugin? (what repository) Adobe appears to provide a 32-bit version, but not a 64-bit version. It may be that the installation of your 64-bit RPM is performing some extra steps that I am not doing when I install 'libflashplayer.so' manually.

Comment 65 Mark Harig 2009-09-03 00:00:38 UTC
Perhaps this explains why some content can be played with the 64-bit flash player / library, and some cannot:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/releasenotes_64bit.html

"The prerelease version of the 64-bit Adobe Flash Player 10 for Linux may not be able to play some streaming video content. The 64-bit Flash Player is not yet compatible with the RTMP security measures introduced in the FMS 3.0.3 and 3.5.1 Service Packs, and content delivered using those measures will not play."

Odd that it works for Fedora 10 but not Fedora 11.

Only thing I removed was xine-plugin below. Interestingly I had two when firefox was crashing.

flash-plugin-10.0.32.18-release.i386

xulrunner-1.9.1.2-1.fc11.i586

I don't know if this is related but as of this morning (9/22/09; all updates installed), both firefox and galeon core dump when I start them (does not even open window). Seamonkey runs just fine. I did not have problems earlier.

Comment 72 blachniom 2009-09-27 11:01:36 UTC
Hi,
Fedora 11 here also. Firefox crashes for me when used out-of-the-box with any Flash-enabled site.
I've read about the workaround to remove some library from FF root directory for Flash to work, but simply forgot the name of the proper library to delete.
Strange thing is, trying randomly I've renamed the libnss3.so library (instead of the above suggested libfreebl3.so) from inside Firefox (3.5.3) directory to something else and the Flash sites started to open correctly right away.
Same result was when I've renamed the libfreebl3.so delivered with one of the previous versions of FF (3.5 I believe) leaving the libnss3.so unchanged. It's still the case with the current 3.5.3 version.
So, apparently, there's more to it than just one colliding library.
Regards

I am seeing the same (which is to say the page loads, I get a black box as if content is about to play and after about a second, firefox dies on me, on a 64-bit Fedora install, with the 64-bit version of the flash plugin library downloaded from Adobe's site.

It's this archive from Adobe:

libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

It would seem to happen for any youtube video you care to mention, and for the flash front page of the website one of my customers launched today. *sigh*. Hence i'm pushed over the threshold of reporting on this now.

I've tried all the suggestions above, to no avail, with and without nspluginwrapper.

My system too has been upgraded through several versions of FC, although I've generally followed the YumUpgradeFaq recommendations to keep it as clean as possible.

Eventually I realised that I had some legacy stuff (eg. wine emulation) nailing my system to having 2 versions of glibc (both x86_64 and i686), so I removed the i686 version, and now only have the x86_64 glibc installed (you should only need one or the other, not both, AFAIK now, so if 'rpm -q glibc' shows up two packages that might be where your problem is. PITA to fix, mind you!).

I also wrote a script to kill of any (non-RPM-owned) files from /usr/lib/ and /lib/ that doesn't have a companion in /lib64 or /usr/lib64/ in desperation after the aforementioned tactic didn't work. That script didn't solve this bug either, although I can publish it if people think it'll help them.

I wish it wasn't a rawhide install, but the rhythmbox CD playing bug forced my hand because of my noisy office. Having to build a custom thunderbird2 package to get my per-account inboxes back was quite annoying as well [that's a bug I'm not annoyed enough about to file!] :(

I'll attach a backtrace momentarily.

Apologies for the pagination, I didn't know that's how it would be presented until it was too late. Hope it makes sense to someone anyway, it makes my brain hurt to look at the thing.

Sorry, no debug-info, but it clearly shows the illegal instruction is within
libflashplayer.so.

Note that all my machines with >=2GB RAM (all have nVidia proprietary driver)
have no problem with flash, although they usually hang firefox from time to
time. Only my machine with 768MB RAM consistently crashes firefox (uses ATI
open source driver, if that matters)

I'd guess that there is a bug in libflashplayer.so that manifests readily with
small (<1GB) memory but goes undetected with large memory (probably low
probability of badly modifying stack)

Do you belong to "group rpm" or "group download"?

I think we should distinguish this bug in two separate scenarios.

- some people use Firefox+Xulrunner rpm packages, as provided by Fedora (original install, or updated using yum, or one of the Fedora GUI tools to update). Let's call these people "group rpm".

- some people use a Firefox which they have downloaded directly from a mozilla site, in .tar.bz2 format. They have extraced the archive and explicitly run firefox from the extracted directory, probably somewhere in /home/user/Download/firefox

I think this bug was originally about "group download".

If you are a member of "group download", could you please try the following?
When you start firefox, please add LD_PRELOAD="/lib/libfreebl3.so"

In other words, if you currently start firefox similar to this:
  cd /home/user/Download/firefox
  ./firefox
then please use
  cd /home/user/Download/firefox
  LD_PRELOAD="/lib/libfreebl3.so" ./firefox

Does this fix the crash for you?
It fixes it for me.

I think the more recent comments in this bug are about "group rpm".
I don't have any idea why nspr or nss would cause a crash in flashplayer.
I suspect all people of "group rpm" who experience a crash in flash suffer from a bug in flash itself.

I propose, this bug 505365 shall be for "group download".

All discussion from members of "group rpm" should be moved to a new separate bug report.

Comment 78 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-11-03 21:17:31 UTC
If you are from "group download",
and the
  LD_PRELOAD="/lib/libfreebl3.so" ./firefox
still gives you crashes,
then please try to remove all of the following files from your downloaded firefox directory:

libnspr4.so
libplc4.so
libplds4.so

libfreebl3.so
libnss3.so
libnssdbm3.so
libnssutil3.so
libsmime3.so
libsoftokn3.so
libssl3.so

I consider to recommend that nspr and nss shall, from now on, be considered system libraries of a linux distribution, and that mozilla.com should no longer include these files with the firefox distribution package.

(However, it might be necessary to make these files available as a separate download, for those who don't have them.)

Comment 79 Kai Engert (:kaie) (inactive account) 2009-11-09 21:58:21 UTC
Long comment, trying to summarize. If you still have a problem with flash and firefox, please read in detail.

=====
First, make sure you no longer have libflashsupport installed

=====
If you have downloaded and extracted Firefox from a mozilla.com site, then this bug is confirmed, and I've created a wiki page to document the knowledge around this issue:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mozilla_NSS_Conflict

If you're using 32 bit Mozilla, and the instructions on that page don't help you, please let us know.

If you're using 64 bit Mozilla with 64 bit Flash, and some flash content works, but some flash content does not, your issue should be reported to Adobe.

=====
If you
- (still) crash using Firefox with Flash
and
- you have NOT downloaded Firefox yourself
in other words
- you use Firefox software that is provided by Fedora as a RPM

then please cc yourself to bug 533959 and shortly reconfirm your problem, mentioning whether you use 32 or 64 bit software.

I believe there is no crash with 32 bit flash and 32 bit fedora firefox, so your comments (or reconfirmation) are of interest.

I understand there is a crash with 64 bit flash using some content, but some other flash content works fine.

I don't understand why Vassilios crashes, he said (in comment 47 and comment 50) he crashes using 32 bit Fedora RPM, NOT firefox downloaded from mozilla.com

If I understand correctly, Jani's crash was fixed by removing libflashsupport (comment 48).

I don't understand why Stephen crashes (comment 69), he uses 32 bit Firefox, apparently the Fedora RPM version. I never crash when I visit the site mentioned in comment 69.

Vassilios, Jani, Stephen, if I'm correct you're using Fedora RPMs, only, when crashing, then let's move your bug analysis to bug 533959.

Somewhere since this was posted I either removed something or added something that fixed the problem for me.

Stephen, thanks a lot for your update, I'm glad it's now working for you. BTW, in the future when posting to bugzilla, you may want to trim the quoted text to the required parts, and attach long information as files, instead of pasting inline as text, this helps to keep bug reports easier to read, thanks!

Is it me or does firefox from fedora (3.5.6) crash more than it used to?
Even when it is just sitting there? (x86_64)

This message is a reminder that Fedora 11 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 11. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '11'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 11's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 11 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 86 Bug Zapper 2010-12-05 06:51:52 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
