Thanks for a bug report. Is it possible to attach here a message this was crashing on, please? I only see it had some audio file attached there probably, and then it crashed when trying to decode it, thus maybe not an evolution issue, though a message to ensure that would be really helpful. Feel free to sanitize (rewrite) all private information in the message. Thanks in advance.
I'm afraid I got rid of it, but it was indeed just a simple message with an audio file from one of those VOIP services. It was not a large file, as it was a fax, so just a few seconds were recorded. The file wa an mp3 file BTW.
Thanks for the update. I tried to reproduce this, but with no luck. I attached an MP3 to the email and saved it as a draft. I guess the file was somehow broken, and thus this crashed in the mpeg decoder code for you. I'm closing this for now, but please feel free to reopen if you'll receive similar message which will crash Evolution. Thanks in advance.
But Milan, assume the file was corrupted -- so what? Having Evolution crash on a corrupted file is certainly a bug. Shouldn't the playing of a audio file go through an external app (such as /usr/bin/play) to avoid such problems altogether?
There is a plugin creating the inline "view" of the attached audio file, and it is using some library, which is crashing, taking together with it also evolution. Having this done through an external application may make harder to control when it should pause, play, stop and such. It would be better to fix the code in the library. Or maybe Evolution itself, I do not know, I'm only guessing the file was corrupted, but maybe it wasn't, maybe Evolution freed the memory for it before the library was done with it, really hard to tell. It would be better to have some message for testing. (I suppose it didn't left in your Trash folder, right?)
No, I've checked the Trash folder, it's no longer there :( I'll re-report if it happens again. However, problem is that a lot of these Evo crashes happen in the background or are triggered by an inconspicuous action like activating the window (i.e. bringing it to foreground), so it is nearly impossible for me to tell WTH is going on, much less to figure out what message caused it...
I tried to play a .mp3 file attached to a message, and it crashed again. I will attach the message that cause the crash. I must say that after restarting evolution, I was able to play it without it crashing.
Created attachment 460089 [details] This is the message that caused the crash.
Thanks for the update. I just tried to import it to my On This Computer folder and it doesn't crash, same as for you the second time. I guess it is related. What is your account type you see this issue from, please? (Account type is also called "protocol", either IMAP,IMAP+,exchange/...) My the very first guess would be that there is something wrong with the mesage the first time it is downloaded from the server, but the next time, when picked from the local cache it is constructed properly and doesn't crash evolution.
I'm using IMAP as protocol.
Hrm, seems to work for me even with IMAP, and when erasing the locally downloaded message, thus forcing it to refetch.
