Comment 3 Josh Boyer 2011-09-26 19:36:10 UTC
Is this still happening with the latest 2.6.40.x F15 kernel update?

Comment 4 Lex Chou 2011-09-28 00:35:19 UTC
I have this bug on my 2.6.40.4-5.fc15.x86_64 too.
my network adapter is r8169, I tried to use
ethtool -s p7p1 autoneg off
to disable auto-negotiation, the kernel crash seems happens less frequently, but the network still is unavailable sometimes, and has big packet loss rate(5%~20% packet loss when ping my gateway).

my windows on this machine works fine with this network adapter.

Comment 5 Lex Chou 2011-09-28 14:53:27 UTC
I know how to reproduce this:
1) Use a motherboard with r8168 chip
2) Install Fedora, it will use r8169's driver during the installation.

Solution to fix it:
1) Uninstall r8169
2) Install a correct driver.

Comment 14 Frederic Grelot 2011-11-17 09:05:46 UTC
I get the same bug, using r8169 driver for my motherboard ethernet controller.
I'm not sure about kernel versions, but it's Fedora 16, and it happend with the latest 2 kernels, so it must be 3.1.1-1 or 3.1.0-7. I will check this tonight.

This is the stack trace I got :

All those dumps are inside "paravirt_read_tsc"

And of course, I don't have any network connectivity anymore (pinging from another computer does not give one single answer)

In comment #5, Lex Chou says that :
Solution to fix it:
1) Uninstall r8169
2) Install a correct driver.

I'd be happy to hear how to use another driver than the one provided with the kernel (although I doubt it's easy...)

This morning, I disabled the onboard network controller, and the computer seemed to work perfectly fine : however, I can't do anything without the network...

My first temporary solution will be to add a PCI Ethernet card but it may also be an R8169...

Comment 15 Frederic Grelot 2011-11-17 09:11:20 UTC
I just realized that the kernel version is in the dump... So it's definitely 3.1.1-1.fc16.x86_64 (and motherboard is an M5A97)
(and sorry for the ugly dump, I should have shortened line headers a bit... But I'm on a MS/Win rescue PC right now, I can't do much more easily!)

Comment 16 Frederic Grelot 2011-11-17 09:25:10 UTC
By the way, I'm pretty sure that these two bugs (tagged as duplicate) are the same as this one :
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=751637
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715137

Comment 17 Frederic Grelot 2011-11-20 16:21:52 UTC
I tried many things, and discovered what caused the bug in my case : somewhere on my network, one of the computers had crashed (was running F16) and was overloading the network. I don't know what happened to it, but I just turned it off. The LEDs of my switches stopped blinking, and the other computer (that one which crashed with the aforementioned stack trace) had no more problems booting...
Thus, the crashed had been fired (in my case) by an unusual activity on the network : unfortunately I cannot say much, but I hope this'll help!

Seen subject issue once at Fedora 16 x86-64 (3.1.5-2.fc16.x86_64.debug).
Also a kmalloc "poison overwritten" errors was throwed, so maybe it is useful (log attached).

I am not sure if this bug can be reprocuded with the current kernel version.
Sometimes I've seen also a kernel panic dump cause of wifi connection change.

3.3.x Kernels kill Networking. On my laptops I can't use Wi-Fi or Wired network with those.
Wi-Fi fails on authentication, Wired simply doesn't resolve addresses and 3.3.1 has crashes on kernel modules... like this time.

Please do not force updates to 3.3.x kernels until these bugs are gone. 3.2.7 Kernel was fine.

It happened again just after a reboot starting the rsync job again. After copying a couple of files the oops occurred and there was no net connectivity (Destination ... unreachable)
Hardware is ASUS Sabertooth 990 FX R2.0 with AMD FX4100

It happened for the third time in a row just after reboot on a server otherwise not used.
A few files rsynced and then poof!
Apparently it is related to high utilization of the network.

This server has the r8168 NIC and the kernel is using the r8169 driver.

However, after power cycling a switch the problem is apparently not reoccurring and copying between the same source server and another server (using netbios) improved in speed by a factor of around 10.
Probably my version of the problem must have been caused by a problem in the switch.

Comment 62 Joergen Thomsen 2013-04-01 11:16:30 UTC
In any case all means to avoid loss of connectivity must be used.
The software must be as much failure resistant as possible and include recovery measures.

It can be a big problem for remotely controlled servers in unmanned locations (in our case a 400 miles trip might be needed).

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 19 development cycle.
Changing version to '19'.

(As we did not run this process for some time, it could affect also pre-Fedora 19 development
cycle bugs. We are very sorry. It will help us with cleanup during Fedora 19 End Of Life. Thank you.)

Description of problem:
Hello
I was just doing some usual work like browsing the internet and chatting via skype, no installation was running. Suddenly the desktop got 'frozen', therefore I restarted the laptop manually.
To add, if it helps: Fedora 18 is the only filesystem on the machine right now.
Thank you for the solution, good luck :)

Description of problem:
The issue has appeared shortly after boot & while online. Most recently, while online. I cannot reproduce the issue. It is random. I did a clean install of F18 when it was available. At the last kernel update, the issue started. I reinstalled, thinking I did something incorrectly. The current kernel is the same as had I previously updated to. Thanks!!!

This also occurs on F20 with 3.13.10-200.fc20.x86_64 on VirtualBox.

Comment 82 Marcel Wysocki 2015-07-08 09:56:34 UTC
I'm on F22 haven't seen this in a long time.

Comment 83 ilmostro7 2015-11-15 06:44:07 UTC
I'm seeing this on a daily basis on a RHEL7.2 system with a public-facing intel NIC; seeing that it's related to e1000e, I'm not sure why wifi issues were listed as potential causes for this issue early on in this report. I've switched to Fedora22 for the moment to observe if the same behavior will trigger this crash. For the time being, here's the stacktrace from the RHEL7.2 side of things:

It looks like it also happens with fedora23. This only appears to happen when connected to my service providers Cisco gear on a 10mbit ethernet link. Controller set to 100/full.

Comment 86 Trevor Cordes 2017-07-25 06:31:29 UTC
I'm just seeing this now on a box of mine for the first time, never had this problem before. I'm 99% sure it's (for me!) related to upgrading to kernel 4.11 from 4.10 on Fedora 24. The "hang" error message occurred within 1 hour of first booting 4.11. Going back to 4.10 and the hang messages go away.

In my case, the hang messages don't actually hang the card: traffic still flows. However, after hundreds of them it seems to corrupt the kernel so badly that it triggers the kernel bugs/oops. The hangs are severe, not even magic sysrq works. I think each hang message is corrupting kernel ram somewhere.

The box with the problem has 82574L onboard nic that is the problem. The other onboard nic (82579LM) does not show the problem. Nothing else changed except for the kernel version. I have seen other reports specifically naming 82574L like here:
https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=13021

Because I have this pinned between 2 kernel versions, I'm going to do a bisect when I get time. I will probably open a new bz for my bug since it almost certainly isn't the same one that seems to pop up every year or so as shown in this bug... since mine popped up only on the newest kernel (never on those older ones, and this box has been running those older ones in the past).

Comment 87 Trevor Cordes 2017-07-25 07:52:56 UTC
Sorry, spoke too soon. I worked on this for a while and determined it wasn't 4.10 -> 4.11 that caused the bug, it was that this box was upgraded from 32-bit to 64-bit x86_64 OS at the exact time I moved from 4.10 to 4.11.

My statement "Going back to 4.10 and the hang messages go away" was wrong... I did see the error after being in 4.10 (64-bit) for a few hours.

So the error and bug occurs in:
4.10 64-bit
4.11 64-bit

and never occurs in
4.10 and earlier 32-bit
(and I can't test 4.11+ in 32-bit anymore as I'm now stuck in 64-bit)

The upshot is I cannot bisect, as I have no known "good" state I can go back to since this bug could have been in there in 64-bit for ages.

I have put in the ethtool -K enp2s0 tso off gso off gro off I've seen suggested, we'll see if that mitigates this bug until Fedora gets e100e 3.3.5(?) which is suggested elsewhere it may solve this. If that doesn't not solve the bug I may report back here.

I want to note that in my case that NIC is running the external internet link, and it's at 1Gbps. I have other similar boxes (same onboard NIC) that are not showing the bug and they have neither condition. So that may be a hint for any bug-solvers to follow if the bug is situation dependent.

Comment 88 Trevor Cordes 2017-08-06 07:30:31 UTC
Just wanted to report that over here our e1000e warnings are gone as per my last post (with the ethtool workarounds), but the hang we were getting is still occurring, and has a new upstream bug already:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196443
and rhbz #1473242

At least now my kernel hang/bug is not tainted by the wonky e1000e error. I'm not sure if these are related, but they smell like it to me. The OP at the above bugs seems to also be using e1000e (as per his module dump).

Comment 89 David W. Legg 2019-07-26 09:32:31 UTC
In case this helps, I am seeing the e1000e 'Detected Hardware Unit Hang:#012' message in /var/log/messages with these kernels:-

5.1.18-300.fc30.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jul 15 15:42:34 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on an Intel NUC PC.

I can send more into if it helps at all. Best of luck with this one.

Comment 90 David W. Legg 2019-07-26 09:51:48 UTC
Correction: I am not sure about the 5.1.19 kernel. Sorry.

This is probably not an issue for a long time.
